Funaki is still the 1

By Stephen Tsai on October 18, 2008

Despite throwing five interceptions against Boise State, Inoke Funaki will remain as the No. 1 quarterback. Head coach Greg McMackin said Funaki played well in the first half. * * * Kealoha Pilares, who has a sprained right foot, was wearing a medical boot after the game. But he was walking without crutches after the game. The injury is on the sunny-side part of his foot. The Warriors really missed him in the final three quarters. * * * When […]

Game day: Boise State

By Stephen Tsai on October 17, 2008

BOISE — “Ferd” and I just took the tour of the Boise State press box. It’s an amazing facility. Each box is nicer than my hotel room. And bigger, too. We visited Jim Donovan and WAC commissioner Karl Benson. They smiled, let us steal cookies that were as big as Frisbees, then sort of hinted that we needed to beat it. Business talk, as they say. Benson, a Boise State graduate, is wearing a blue shirt, but insisted it’s not […]

NCAA clears Rausch

By Stephen Tsai on October 16, 2008

BOISE — The good news is the NCAA reinstated quarterback Brent Rausch, deciding that he should not be penalized for a clerical error. (He punched in the wrong code on an eligibility form in August.) The bad news is the decision came too late to help Rausch, who was left behind on this trip to Boise.  Jake Santos replaced Rausch on the 65-player roster. * * * Jim Donovan and Greg McMackin: * * * Ryan Mouton was booming punts: […]

Clerical error keeps Rausch from traveling

By Stephen Tsai on October 15, 2008

A clerical error is preventing University of Hawai‘i backup quarterback Brent Rausch from being declared eligible to play in Friday’s nationally televised road game against 15th-ranked Boise State. “I feel sorry for Brent,” UH head coach Greg McMackin said. “It’s not his fault.” The problem stems from an eligibility form Rausch filled out Aug. 2 during the orientation session for first-year Warriors. Rausch inadvertently put in the wrong code in one of form’s boxes. The mistake was not detected until […]

Tuesday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on October 14, 2008

• It appears that defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea now will opt to have surgery on his injured left triceps. He did not practice today. • Defensive end Victor Clore will undergo an MRI today on his injured right knee. It is believed he might have a problem with his posterior cruciate ligament. If so, he would only miss a couple of games and not require surgery. • Tyler Graunke resumed practicing. • Graduate assistant David Gilmore is on a personal […]

Hilo lineman to join UH; Monday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on October 13, 2008

The Warriors are continuing to look to the future, this time adding offensive tackle Jordan Loeffler of Hilo High. Loeffler, who is 6 feet 5 and 265 pounds, said he will sign his letter of intent in February. Because he is only 16, he has a lot of upside — and a frame to fill out. • Defensive tackle Rocky Savaiigaea (partially torn left triceps) competed in drills today. He is optimistic he will play this week • Defensive end […]

New tournament

By Stephen Tsai on October 12, 2008

Ferd Lewis and Dayton Morinaga are reporting this new basketball tournament, which will take place during the holiday season. http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/20081012/BREAKING02/81012054 Your thoughts? * * * • Think Greg McMackin will be asking the WAC for some “clarifications” of some of the calls in last night’s game? • The need for, uh, clarifications was supposed to have been reduced with the combined WAC-MWC-Big 12 crews. • Of the play in which he hurt his fingers, wideout Malcolm Lane said: “(The cornerback) […]

Game day

By Stephen Tsai on October 11, 2008

Instead of watching a movie, the Warriors attended the Rainbow Wahine volleyball match last night. It was a nice way of supporting another program. After the match, the Warriors were hurried back to a hotel in Waikiki for meeting in preparation for tonight’s game against Louisiana Tech. * * * Whether you believe in building a rail system or not, that’s your choice. But it sure was an odd sight to see rail opponents protesting outside of Aloha Stadium while […]
