Going into OT?

By Stephen Tsai on February 7, 2009

Whew. Recruiting is finally over. Or is it? The Warriors have saved two scholarships for prospects that might become available. The Warriors have had success in signing post-signing-day recruits. Two come to mind: Adam Leonard and Colt Brennan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know Colt joined as  a walk-on. But it really was a wink-wink agreement in which he would earn a scholarship if he contributed his first semester. We can agree Brennan did. * * * Don’t forget to attend […]

Cheepono, HawaiianKiko win tickets

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2009

E-mail me at stsai@honoluluadvertiser.com and I’ll get  you the tickets. Or you may call me at 256-0223. Thanks. * * * Thanks again to Coach Mack for being our video guest. As I understand it, we encountered problems with “choppiness” during Mack’s segment. I guess the techs cleaned it up for the replay.

Recruiting update

By Stephen Tsai on February 3, 2009

• Liloa Nobriga is going to Colorado. One of the selling points, according to his father, was that “Colorado and UH play three times in the next four years.”  Gee, who made that schedule? Oh, wait, now I remember. • Oregon State is making a late push for Chad Lopati. • A relative has been trying to convince Wade Keli‘ikipi to stick with UH. But there are a lot of personal issues involved, and it looks like he’s bound for […]

A true champion

By Stephen Tsai on February 2, 2009

Every female athlete at UH should give thanks to Dr. Donnis Thompson, who passed away today. Dr. Thompson was a great pioneer and, most important, a great person. * * * In addition to the commitment from Kapolei High cornerback Kalani Brackenridge, the Warriors also received pledges from Thousand Oaks High running back John Lister and Butte College defensive end Jonathan “Jon Bon” Watts. Lister, who is 6-2 and 210 pounds, rushed for 2,238 yards and 27 touchdowns last season. […]

Kapolei's Brackenridge commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on February 1, 2009

Kapolei High cornerback Kalani Brackenridge told The Warrior Beat this afternoon that he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. He is 5-11, 165 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in 4.5 seconds. He also will play for the UH baseball team. His father was in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ and Minnesota Twins’ system. His brother recently signed as a cornerback with the J-E-T-S. * * * Iuta Tepa and Kimo Makaula are gone. Liloa Nobriga is […]

Iceman gets futbol opportunity

By Stephen Tsai on January 31, 2009

Former UH placekicker Dan “Iceman” Kelly has tryouts planned with Chivas USA and the L.A. Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Kelly was a decorated goalie until deciding to pursue a football career. For now, he is putting his football aspirations on hold to focus on soccer. He also coaches a youth team. Even at UH, Kelly kept busy during the football offseason by playing soccer.
