Veikune impresses at combine

By Stephen Tsai on February 22, 2009

David Veikune bench pressed 225 pounds 35 times, placing fourth among all prospects at the NFL Scouting Combine. Offensive lineman Louis Vasquez had 39 reps, followed by defensive linemen Terrance Taylor’s 37 and Roy Miller’s 36. * * * They say legends are made in the weight room, so here’s one. Last week, wideout Rodney Bradley, a transfer from Navarro Junior College, was exercising in the UH weight room. A coach asked: “How high can you jump?” Bradley then touched […]

Saturday ramblings

Clarence “Lafu” Tuioti-Mariner is the latest to “retire” from football. He won’t participate in Pro Day. Instead, he is intent on completing work on his bachelor’s degree. Tuioti-Mariner never quite had the career we all envisioned. But he worked hard, was popular and tried to be upbeat. He now tries to help the offensive linemen during unsupervised workouts. * * * Laupepa Letuli has trimmed down — his body and, most noticeably, his hair. * * * Here’s Oregon State […]

Tormey joins UH staff; top volleyball player hurt

By Stephen Tsai on February 20, 2009

Stealing away Chris Tormey from Washington has to be the best move of UH’s offseason. Tormey, who will be UH’s special teams coordinator, brings experience, knowledge and subtle competitive spunk. He was the head coach at Idaho and then Nevada. He really rebuilt the Nevada football program, helping usher its way into the WAC. Best of all is this adds extra spice to this coming season’s game against Nevada and its head coach Chris Ault. * * * Steven Hunt, […]

By Stephen Tsai on February 17, 2009

Gordy  Shaw, a veteran offensive line coach, has been hired as the University of Hawaii football team’s offensive line. Don't You (Forget About Me)

By Stephen Tsai on February 16, 2009

We’ll all be remembered for something. Chawan Cut for that Dan Kelly sign. A-Joe for the C&K show. A reader for a tree.  Me? That would be apple martinis, hugging classmates who turned out not to be my classmates, and having an XXL forehead. Each Hawai‘i governor also has left a sports legacy. John Burns built Aloha Stadium and paved the way for UH to enter big-time athletics. George Ariyoshi upgraded UH’s Lower Campus, building the athletic complex, Duke Kahanamoku […]
