Colt delivers

By Stephen Tsai on July 15, 2009

The checks are in the mailbox. Colt Brennan’s wish was completed when the Koolauloa Red Raiders received money to pay for new uniforms for their four Pop Warner teams (ages 8-15). Brennan and the NFL donated an equal share to the Hau‘ula program. “They got both checks this week,” Brennan said. “Of all of the things I’ve done, this is something I’m most proud of and most stoked about.” Brennan learned of the NFL’s matching-donation project from a Redskin teammate. […]

The Show

By Stephen Tsai on July 14, 2009

Davone Bess, Ryan Mouton Special thanks to Ryan Mouton and Davone Bess for serving as guests on today’s Warrior Beat Show. Also big thanks to Colt Brennan for making a guest appearance. OK, Esme, that’s six times you’ve missed meeting Colton. * * * * * When spring practice ended a couple of months ago, Brashton Satele weighed 264 pounds, and the UH coaches plotted his move from middle linebacker to defensive end. But Satele then went to train with […]

By Stephen Tsai on July 13, 2009

Baldwin High graduate Kaluka Maiava and the Cleveland Browns agreed to terms on a four-year contract worth just under $2.3 million, an NFL source said. His agent, Kenny Zuckerman of Priority Sports, could not be reached for comment. * * * * * Mom and brother were not so happy when wideout Billy Ray Stutzmann received a tribal tattoo that covered his left shoulder and the left side of his chest. That tattoo was completed last week. But nobody minded […]

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on July 12, 2009

Random thoughts: • Have a Midnight Ohana-like celebration for the Warriors’ first practice of training camp. The practice could be held at Cooke/Ching field. And it could open with the new Aussie kicker booming a punt from the athletic department roof. There could be giveaways, and Murphy’s could sell breakfast items. Who wouldn’t want pancakes and a little football at midnight? • The Warriors should wear stickers of the Hawaiian flag on their helmets this season. • UH should stage […]

Hello, goodbye

By Stephen Tsai on July 11, 2009

Earvin Sione, who signed with UH in February 2008, said he has met the requirements to play for the Warriors this season. Sione, who is 6 feet 5, can play either wideout, safety or linebacker. He said he is on the Warriors’ training camp roster. * * * * * But Brett Symonds, a kicker who redshirted as a freshman last season, has decided to transfer to College of the Desert. Receiver Matt Kiel also is not expected to return […]

UH leads competiton for top d-lineman

By Stephen Tsai on July 10, 2009

The Warriors have emerged as the early leaders in the recruiting competition for Aiea defensive tackle Lawrence Lagafuaina. Lagafuaina said he told the UH coaches: “I’d love to be a Warrior.” But he stopped short of making a firm verbal commitment. That could come after he takes a recruiting trip to the Manoa campus. The earliest official visit can’t be made until after Sept. 1. Lagafuaina’s stock is rising because of his size (6 feet 1, 315 pounds) and athletic […]

Sean Michael Shigematsu, an offensive tackle who was impressive at last week’s All-Poly Camp, said he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. Shigematsu is 6 feet 5 and 230 pounds. “I always wanted to be a Warrior,” said Shigematsu, who also plays volleyball and basketball. His father, Delroy Shigematsu, was a standout multi-sport athete for Kapa‘a in the late 1970s. * * * * * Running back Chizzy Dimude has been on the run since arriving in town […]

Moanalua DE commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on July 8, 2009

Ipulasi Eselu, a rush end from Moanalua High, said he will accept a 2010 scholarship from the Warriors. Eselu played outside linebacker last season. But after demonstrating agility and quickness at the recent Just Win Camp, he was moved to defensive end. Eselu is 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds. But Moanalua coach Arnold Martinez said Eselu has the frame to comfortably gain more weight without sacrificing quickness. “He has a very high football IQ,” Martinez said. His older brother, […]
