UH head coach Greg McMackin today awarded football scholarships to safety/nickelback Richard Torres and linebacker Corey Paredes. * * * * Rick Taylor has transferred to South Alabama, a Division I-AA school. Some thoughts: • While it was surprising to learn that Malcolm Lane will redshirt this season, the move does ease a crowded situation. Backup wideouts Jovonte Taylor, Royce Pollard and Joe Avery are deserving of playing time. And, if needed, UH also can switch Greg Salas back to wideout, opening the way for reserve slotbacks Dustin Blount, Ryan Henry, Jon Medeiros and Jeremiah Ostrowski. • Center John Estes and middle linebacker Brashton Satele are logical choices to be named co-captains. Malcolm Lane, who was projected as a No. 1 right wideout, told the Warrior Beat yesterday he will redshirt this season to focus on academics. Lane is in good academic standing with both the school and the NCAA. But by redshirting, it will enable Lane to earn a bachelor’s degree in December 2010.
