Express lane

By Stephen Tsai on November 20, 2009

SAN JOSE — Interesting scene in the hotel lobby last night. The flight crew speed-walked to the registration desk in an effort to beat the Warriors to the check-in. It proved to be unnecessary. The Warriors are experienced trvaelers. They were pre-registered, and soon after arriving at the hotel — from a side entrance — they went straight to a banquet room for their post-flight meal (thick steaks, if you’re keeping track). At the dinner, they were handed their room […]

Warriors arrive

The Warriors just arrived at the hotel in San Jose. Greg Salas was running in the halls. I think he’s going to be OK.

Moniz, Salas still not practicing

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2009

Quarterback Bryant Moniz (bruised right ribs) and left slotback Greg Salas (sprained right foot) today missed their third consecutive practice. Both are expected to play in Saturday’s road game against San Jose State. But . . . . . . If Moniz is not available, Shane Austin gets the start, with Brent Rausch as the top backup. . . . If Salas can’t play, UH has two plans: 1) Kealoha Pilares moves from left wideout to slotback, with Royce Pollard, […]

By Stephen Tsai on November 17, 2009

UH announced that its game against Wisconsin will kick off at 6:30 p.m. It will be shown on ESPN2. * * * * * From UH news release: University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade announced the signing of a pair of high school standouts for the 2011 season. Shane Popelka of Chesapeake, Va., and Shane Welch of Coral Springs, Fla., signed their Letters of Intent during the early signing period. “By signing both players, we addressed our immediate […]

Mack closes practices

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2009

Head coach Greg McMackin has decided to close this week’s practices to the public, and prohibit interviews with players from Wednesday through Saturday’s game at San Jose State. McMackin cited a need for the players to focus. In fact, it runs deeper. It was believed some information was leaked to the Spartans before last year’s game. Accredited media will be allowed to attend practices. That’s great. Way to open up the Barry Markowitz debate again … * * * * […]

Tomey will retire after this season

By Stephen Tsai on November 15, 2009

This is from San Jose State: San Jose State University football coach Dick Tomey will announce his retirement from coaching in a November 16, 1:00 p.m. (PST) press conference in the Simpkins Stadium Center Gold Room. The retirement will be effective following the Spartans’ final regular season game on December 5 against Louisiana Tech University. San Jose State also has home games remaining against Hawaii on November 21 and New Mexico State on November 28. Tomey, 71-years-old and the current […]

Game Day: New Mexico State

By Stephen Tsai on November 14, 2009

Liz Chun makes her debut as K5’s sideline reporter. * * * * * The Warriors are wearing same uniforms as last week — green jerseys (with legible white numbers), white pants and, of course, white socks. Kealoha Pilares, ever the stylish player, is wearing white shoes. * * * * * It’s a shame that finances have an impact on a football game. New Mexico State’s football team arrived last night, and it will depart tonight. Twenty-four hours at […]

Visitor count up

By Stephen Tsai on November 13, 2009

It’s a big  recruiting weekend for UH. A player whose initials are Joshua Quezada is expected to visit. * * * * * Brashton Satele’s family has started working on an appeal to allow him to play as a sixth-year senior. It should be a slam dunk. He did not play as a freshman because of a variety of reported injuries. He has missed this season after suffering a shoulder injury in training camp. Then again, when dealing with appeals, […]
