Satele enjoying opportunity

By Stephen Tsai on June 18, 2010

Brashton Satele said he still marvels about being on the New York Jets’ roster after not playing at all in 2009 because of a shoulder injury. Satele, who signed as an undrafted free agent after his NCAA appeal for an extra year was denied, is listed behind All-Pro Bart Scott and fifth-year pro Lance Lowry at weakside linebacker. But Satele has received significant practice time on special teams and in dime situations. “It’s great here,” said Satele, who has been […]

UH-USC game on; UH media guides off

By Stephen Tsai on June 17, 2010

As “Ferd” reports, the UH-USC game will be played Sept. 2, as planned. http://www.staradvertiser.com/news/breaking/96598939.html * * * * * You can look it up. Oh, wait. You can’t. Not unless you have a computer, printer and a lot of time. UH is joining the growing number of schools that will no longer print media guides for wide distribution. The guides will be available on the school’s Web site. Media guides are essentially yearbooks with bios of players and coaches, plus […]

Lefiti to miss training camp

By Stephen Tsai on June 16, 2010

It’s disappointing that center Matagisila Lefiti, who was understudy to ironman John Estes the past two seasons, will miss all of training camp after undergoing recent foot surgery. But his replacement, Bronson Tiwanak, should make an easy adjustment. Tiwanak and quarterback Bryant Moniz were teammates at Fresno City College in 2007. Brett Leonard, who is projected to start at left guard, has practiced at center during unsupervised 7-on-7 drills. Here’s Tiwanak: * * * * * And here’s Brett Leonard: […]

Majam named All-America

By Stephen Tsai on June 15, 2010

UH softball centerfielder Kelly Majam was selected to the ESPN.com All-America team. http://hawaiiathletics.com/news/2010/6/15/SB_0615105015.aspx?path=softball * * * * * Left wideout Rodney Bradley was impressive during 7 on 7 drills yesterday, declaring himself “pain-free” in his surgically repaired left leg. In last season’s game against Idaho, Bradley suffered fracures to his left tibia and fibia. Part of the operation included the insertion of a rod to stabilize the leg. The rod remains, but the pain is gone, Bradley said. He said […]

Plan B

By Stephen Tsai on June 14, 2010

So, Texas and Oklahoma are staying put. That means: • The Pac-10 lures Utah? • The resurrected Big 12 goes after Texas Christian and Brigham Young? • The Mountain West goes after Nevada, Fresno State and one other team? * Nothing at all? Just curious, how many people will sign up to get the Longhorn Network? * * * * * Stretch offers this thought: If USC can’t play 13 games this coming season due to NCAA sanctions, why is […]

Got a minute?

By Stephen Tsai on June 13, 2010

Apparently, Jake Heun was in a rush. The UH backup middle linebacker won his MMA fight yesterday in 41 seconds. * * * * * ESPN is reporting that the Mountain West is interesting in Kansas, Missouri and Kansas State. That goes against the initial feeling that the remaining members of the Big 12 would try to recruit Mountain West teams. But if the Mountain West further expands, the WAC should make a strong pitch for Baylor. On a side […]

On hold

By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2010

Imagine not having any money during one of the biggest sales. As part of NCAA sanctions, USC juniors and seniors are allowed to transfer to another Division I-A school without having to sit out the 2010 season. While the Warriors, of course, are interested in pursuing several USC football juniors and seniors, they do not have any available scholarships. That could change if members of the 2010 recruiting class do not meet the eligibility requirements or if they opt to […]

Can the last WAC team please turn out the lights?

By Stephen Tsai on June 11, 2010

It was no surprise that Boise State would one day leave the WAC, but it still was jolting that “one day” would be today. The Broncos will be joining the Mountain West. Sort of reminds me of a guy who invites himself to a party. For all of the posturing, this is a blow to the WAC — and UH — with a direct hit to the bank accounts. Boise’s departure means: • Losing potential BCS money. • Having a […]
