Mouse boosts mentoring program

The hiring of Mouse Davis is in line with the Warriors’ pairing of coaches with different experience levels. Davis, who has been head coach in four different professional leagues, will serve as mentor to Nick Rolovich, who begins his first season as offensive coordinator. Head coach Greg McMackin, with more than 40 years of coaching experience, is mentoring Dave Aranda, a first-year defensive coordinator. UH to hire Mouse

Mouse Davis will rejoin the UH coaching staff, succeeding Ron Lee, who announced his resignation last month. A news conference is scheduled for tomorrow. Davis will be named as assistant coach in charge of receivers, although he will serve primarily as a mentor to first-year offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, who will call all of the plays. Several freshman football players yesterday attended orientation meetings and underwent physical examinations, giving them a head start in being cleared to participate in the official offseason conditioning program. Among the newcomers are center Kody Afusia, kicker Tyler Hadden, defensive back John Hardy-Tuliau, wide receiver Bubba Poueu-Luna, slotback Allen Sampson, linebacker T.J. Six QBs invited to training camp

Quarterback Corey Nielsen is not on the Warriors’ preliminary training-camp roster. Instead, he will join the team Aug. 23, the first day of UH’s fall semester, when the training-camp roster may expand from 105 players. Bryant Moniz, Shane Austin, Brent Rausch, David Graves, Cayman Shutter and Kevin Spain are the quarterbacks on the training-camp roster. The summer’s quarterback competition has increased with the arrival of Kevin Spain, who begins a mid-term class tomorrow. Spain, a recent graduate of Paradise Valley High in Arizona, joins Bryant Moniz, Shane Austin, Brent Rausch, David Graves and Cayman Shutter as participants in offseason training on the Manoa campus. One of the surprises of unsupervised workouts is Davidson Chimara, a cornerback from Miami. Chimara is 5 feeet 9, 185 pounds, and both quick and physical.
