The waiting game

By Stephen Tsai on March 26, 2011

Mistakes? Now is the time to make a few, according to UH offensive line coach Gordy Shaw. “I don’t care if the defense blitzes every times (in spring drills),” Shaw said. “We might not block a soul. The next practice, when they do the same things, if we pick it up, good. We’ve learned something from our mistakes. You can’t always have success and think you’re ready to go. Through failure, you get better.” Especially during spring training, Shaw said, […]

Holding the line

By Stephen Tsai on March 25, 2011

There will be no change at the top of the offensive line’s depth chart when the Warriors resume spring practice Monday, according to line coach Gordy Shaw. Entering spring break, the No. 1 line was: left tackle Clayton Laurel, left guard Brett Leonard, center Matagisila Lefiti, right guard Chauncy Winchester-Makainai and right tackle Levi Legay. Shaw had said he would evaluate the first five spring practices — a sixth was rescheduled to April 18 because of the tsunami threat — […]

The Glanville Effect

By Stephen Tsai on March 24, 2011

Jerry  Glanville, newly hired head coach of the UFL’s Hartford Colonials, called the Warrior Beat to say he is interesting in stocking his roster with some former Warriors. Among those on his wish list are former UH defensive end Melila Purcelll III, defensive tackle Michael Lafaele, linebacker Blaze Soares, safeties Jacob Patek, Leonard Peters and Lono Manners, and … current offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich. Two years ago, Purcell received a medical buyout from the Cleveland Browns. But he has expressed […]

Painful reminder

By Stephen Tsai on March 23, 2011

It is easy to forget that sacrifices football players make extend beyond their college careers. Here’s one reminder: Quarterback Greg Alexander, whose Warrior career ended with a knee injury suffered during a 2009 game, recently underwent his 10th surgery on that knee. * * * * * The UH-BYU volleyball matches will be shown tomorrow and Friday on BYU’s cable network. That network was one of the reasons BYU decided to go independent in football; it also served as inspiration […]

Leon Schumaker

By Stephen Tsai on March 22, 2011

Sorry to hear about the death of Leon Schumaker.  Leon was listed as the UH athletic department’s director of student affairs, but  that title did not fully describe the wonderful job he did in assisting student-athletes. He found ways not only to keep players eligible, but to help them graduate. If there were problems or concerns, Leon would work to find solutions. He did not fear the NCAA, he feared letting down students.  Leon had a background in other sports. […]

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2011

• “Ferd” has another interesting story on the future of UH’s pay-per-view. He is so good at working the freedom-of-information process it should be renamed Ferd of information. And as Garret and others have discussed on the previous post, the combination of Oceanic’s lone ownership rights, the loss of ESPN coverage and the Mountain West deal could impact the Warriors’ Mainland fans in the future. And UH’s deal with the Big West still hasn’t been addressed. Stay tuned.  • Not […]

Specialists sought

By Stephen Tsai on March 19, 2011

It is now estimated the Warriors will need to cut up to 30 players at the end of spring training to make room for the recruits and preferred walk-ons who will join this summer.  Head coach Greg McMackin has emphasized that the best way to make the team is by earning a spot on one of the six special-team units. During Wednesday’s extended session for specialists, McMackin told the players: “It starts right here.” One thing is for sure: The […]
