Finals week

By Stephen Tsai on April 11, 2011

Big week for the Warriors, who have two full spring practices — this afternoon and Wednesday — and the Warrior Bowl Friday to shape the roster. Next Monday’s practice will focus only on special teams. Tyler Hadden seized the lead in the kicking competition during Hilo’s scrimmage, converting three field goals, including two from 42 yards. The battle at right tackle, between Levi Legay and Sean Shigematsu, should extend through the summer. UH line coach Gordy Shaw said there are […]

Look to the Sky

By Stephen Tsai on April 10, 2011

Some  UH sports images just stick. Like quarterback Michael Carter running the speed option. Or point guard Anthony Carter, who probably is 5 feet 11, soaring for a dunk off an alley-oop feed. Then there is volleyball player Joshua “Sky” Walker hitting a pipe set. The play is called “bic” — back-row quick attack — and it combines Michael Carter’s quick pitch and Anthony Carter’s gravity-defying surge. Setter Nejc Zemljak will glance at a left-side hitter, then spits out a […]

Auditions still open

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2011

Tomorrow’s football scrimmage in Hilo probably will not be any different than the situational-like plays the Warriors run in the final period of recent spring practices. Players won’t be allowed to go to the ground; quarterbacks, as always, will not be touched. Everybody will play. But the scrimmage/practice is significant, and not just because it provides an opportunity for the Warriors to wade into another fan base. The Warriors are trying to shape depth charts and figure out which on-the-bubble […]

Thursday mutterings

By Stephen Tsai on April 7, 2011

Some leftover notes from yesterday’s practice: • Barring unforeseen circumstances, John Hardy-Tuliau and Tank Hopkins will exit spring practice as the No. 1 cornerbacks. Kawika Ornellas, who’s still a walk-on, has been a solid third corner. Mike Edwards gets added to the mix for training camp in August. Dee Maggitt has played well, and moved “into the conversation,” as they say. • Steve Christian, a former cornerback has been making the adjustment to safety. It should get interesting in the […]

Wednesday’s practice

By Stephen Tsai on April 6, 2011

UH  today conducted the 10th practice of spring training. The highlights: There were auditions for punt returners. Here’s Allen Sampson: And here’s Tank Hopkins: Here’s Art Laurel aligned as the “elephant” linebacker: John Hardy-Tuliau, who played quarter last year, is the No. 1 right cornerback in spring training: Near the end of practice, UH held the “Oklahoma” drill. In this version, it was 3-on-2, with running back Joey Iosefa given three chances to go 10 yards: Offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich’s […]

Action Jackson

By Stephen Tsai on April 5, 2011

Sterling Jackson is admittedly adventurous, saying, “I like the rush.” Which is appropriate for a running back counted on to be the Warriors’ top rusher. Some fun facts: • Jackson was raised in Stone Mountain, a Georgia suburb in DeKalb County. In July 2009, Stone Mountain’s population was 7,722. • In high school, he was on the football, track, wrestling and swimming teams. In track, his best time in the 100-meter dash was 10.7 seconds. In swimming, he competed in […]

Monday’s contest

By Stephen Tsai on April 4, 2011

Anyone interested in a football glove autographed by Greg Salas? That’s today’s prize. To enter the drawing please post: I wanna catch an NFL draft. Salas has agreed to choose the winning entry number. * * * * * Sampson (right) It started as an experiment. But it appears that Allen Sampson’s future might be at left wideout, where he will practice the rest of spring training.Sampson was a slotback in 2010. * * * * * The Warriors’ championship […]
