Wednesday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on April 27, 2011

• Two former Warriors — linebacker Brashton Satele of the New York Jets and center John Estes of the Jacksonville Jaguars — are training in Arizona while awaiting a permanent resolution to the NFL labor dispute. While camps might or might not be open because of the injunction, the two players have been instructed to stay put. • Offensive lineman Kainoa LaCount also is working out in Arizona. He was contacted by the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons. • Offensive […]

Looking ahead

By Stephen Tsai on April 26, 2011

The outline of the Warriors’ 2012 recruiting class is being shaped this week. This is considered to be an evaluation period during which coaches may assess a prospect’s football talent and academic records. A school is permitted one call a week to the prospect during this period, but may not have in-person contact. Embracing technology, the coaches are reviewing highlight DVDs and YouTube links. * * * * * It should be quite a show as UH, Nevada and Fresno […]

All’s well …

By Stephen Tsai on April 25, 2011

A little more than a year ago, linebacker Brashton Satele and offensive tackle Laupepa Letuli were seeking NCAA exemptions that would allow them to play as sixth-year Warriors in 2010. Letuli’s petition was approved; Satele’s was rejected. “I was down,” Satele said. As it turned out, the rejection might have been a blessing. Satele signed a free-agent contract with the New York Jets, started in the fourth preseason game despite not being fully recovered from an injury, and lasted until […]

Happy Easter!

* * * * * The Warriors have established recruiting footholds in Northern California, Southern California, Las Vegas, Washington state, American Samoa and Australia. Now they are targeting the South. They have started to compile a list of prospects from the South. * * * * * With the approach of this week’s NFL draft, former UH slotback Kealoha Pilares already has earned a camp spot. “I’m just relaxing,” said Pilares, who is camping with relatives on the North Shore. Prose and cons

By Stephen Tsai on April 23, 2011

Russ Lande of The Sporting News did a complete mock draft of all seven rounds. He predicts two former Warriors will be selected in the sixth round — running back Alex Green by the Oakland Raiders, and receiver Greg Salas by the New York Giants with a compensatory pick. Lande has Green as the 12th running back selected; Salas is the 25th receiver. Here’s the link: Sporting News mock draft. But there is hope. Our friends at draftdaddy.com report that […]

Superficial cuts

By Stephen Tsai on April 22, 2011

This week, several Warriors were told they would not be on the 105-player roster for training camp. Several also were told they would not be invited to rejoin the football team Aug. 22, the first day of the fall semester, when rosters are allowed to expand. But UH has decided not to announce the cuts because they are written in chalk. Head coach Greg McMackin said some spots might open — academic deficiencies, personal issues — and that cut players […]

MPSF honors 3 Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on April 21, 2011

Opposite attacker Jonas Umlauft today was named to the all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s first team. Umlauft leads the country in kills, with 5.55 per set. Left-side hitter Joshua Walker and setter Nejc Zemljak were named to the second team. The Warriors departed this afternoon for the Mainland, where they will play UC Irvine in Saturday’s first round of the MPSF playoffs. How big of a match is this? For the first time this year, the “big bus” drove them to […]

Planning ahead

By Stephen Tsai on April 20, 2011

It will be a short break for the Warriors. Next week, conditioning/strength coordinator Tommy Heffernan will be distributing the offseason workout book. The book has day-by-day guidelines leading to the start of training camp. It also will list the results of various tests — 10- and 20-yard dashes; bench presses; power cleans, etc. — of all of the players. That will help provide motivation. The book will allow players to maintain workout schedules even if they choose to go to […]
