The jersey situation

By Stephen Tsai on June 6, 2011

The Warriors will have a new look this coming football season. Under Armour has created new jerseys, which are expected to be unveiled in a news conference in August. Word on the boulevard is that both home and road jerseys will feature designs on the left side that will resemble a tattoo sleeve. The Maryland-based company created the design after consulting with experts in Polynesian culture. Under Armour also has created a new line of cleats. Several players who have […]

Out of the cold

In a whirlwind courtship, it took less than 48 hours for Dustin Adams to fall in love with the UH football program. “I went up there last week, on Monday through Wednesday, and I toured the college and met all of the coaches,” said Adams, an offensive lineman at Minot High in North Dakota. “It felt good. That’s why I made my decision. Yep, I decided to become a Warrior.” Adams will sign a letter of intent in February, then […]

For the love of the game

By Stephen Tsai on June 4, 2011

Hi, I’m Kortney Kikiloi-Borthwick, and I am very honored to be today’s guest blog writer. Stephen and I have been friends for the past four years. UH football has been a big part of my life for the past 26 years. Did I mention that I am 29? From the age of 3, my dad started taking me to football games. I loved cheering, yelling “defense” when I had no idea what defense was, and getting churros and souvenirs. At a […]

The Daley Show

By Stephen Tsai on June 3, 2011

First, there is the tattoo. It is smack in the middle of linebacker Brenden Daley’s chest. “The hands are roughed up to mean hard work,” Daley said of the design, which took nearly eight hours to administer. “That’s the world in your hands to make a beautiful life. That’s what it means. Each and every day.” Then there is the size — 6 feet 5 in cleats, maybe 230 pounds without pads. Yet, Daley is quick and moves well laterally. […]

Training Day

By Stephen Tsai on June 2, 2011

The Warriors began their official offseason conditioning program this week, with perfect attendance for everybody who is on the island (about 90 players). Some players who were cut or not invited to training camp participated in conditioning drills yesterday afternoon. After conditioning coordinators Tommy Heffernan and Grant Steen left Ching Field, the players stayed around to conduct their own unsupervised workouts. * * * * * Left wideout Darius Bright displayed first-step quickness and breakaway speed in post routes and […]

Fish and Uvee Dan Fisher, who has been the volleyball Warriors’ associate head coach the past two seasons, has accepted the head coaching job for the Concordia (Calif.) University women’s team, UH head coach Charlie Wade announced today. The Warriors will begin the search for a replacement for Fisher, whose duties included scouting and recruiting. Jeff Hall, a UH assistant, is expected to be a candidate for the associate’s job. * * * * * It should not be surprising […]

Helping hand

Cornerback Mike Edwards, who is set to join the Warriors in mid-July , said he has received inspiration from inside receiver Davone Bess, a former Warrior now with the Miami Dolphins. Edwards played eight games for Tennessee in 2009 before being dismissed after incurring legal troubles. Edwards said he has chatted with Bess, who offered encouragement. Before joining the Warriors, Bess had spent time in a youth detention center for his role in a burglary. “The first thing I told […]

Going the distance

By Stephen Tsai on May 30, 2011

For this Father’s Day celebration, Tommy Heffernan will present himself with a gift that will unwrap over 37.5 miles. “I’m ready,” Heffernan said of the June 18  Hilina‘i Walk. “I think I am.” The walk-a-thon is intended to help defray the tuition costs for his daughter, Hilina‘i, who suffers from hyptonia, a low-muscle-tone condition that can affect motor nerves and muscle strength. She attends Variety School of Hawaii, which has programs helpful for children with delayed development. Heffernan, who is […]
