Monday report

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2011

• Maybe it wasn’t such an impressive victory. No Warrior was named winner of the WAC’s weekly award. Figured Royce Pollard would be an easy choice. It wasn’t just the numbers — three touchdowns and career bests of 10 catches and 216 yards — but he did it with style. The past two games, he’s made some spectacular catches. Sure, sure, it should be limited to a single performance. But if Melissa McCarthy’s performance in “Bridesmaids” helped her win an Emmy for […]

Mission accomplished

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2011

It should be a happy return for the Warriors, who head home today following last night’s road victory against Louisiana Tech. Several Warriors, including linebacker Corey Paredes (sore knee), should benefit from the upcoming bye week. Here’s Richard Torres, who scored on an interception return: * * * * * LaTech quarterback Nick Isham and UH quarterback Bryant Moniz: * * * * * The haka: * * * * * They might not have had the numbers, but the […]

Game day: Louisiana Tech

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2011

RUSTON — Don’t think it’s a coincidence  that Louisiana Tech and Hawaii are opening their WAC seasons against each other for the third year in a row (fourth in five years). The WAC probably thinks it’s the best thing to do for its most geographically polar teams. This is the Warriors’ agenda: 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m. (4:30 a.m.-6 a.m. Hawaii time): Breakfast. 10 a.m.: Wake-up call. 9:30 a.m.-11 a.m.: Pick up game-day gear. 11 a.m. — Meetings. 1:30 p.m.-2 p.m.: Chapel. […]

Southern comfort

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2011

MONROE , La. — Well, this city is unique. Apparently, crawfish can be prepared in so many different ways. The Warriors will be able to experience the Southern hospitality when they arrive (by charter) this afternoon. They had an extended walk-through at the University of Houston this morning.

Don't mess with Texas

HOUSTON — First things first We found Papa’s Bar-B-Q. Here are the babyback ribs and sausages: * * * * * And this is where it all begins: * * * * * Did I mention regular gasoline is $3.20 a gallon? * * * * * OK, on to practice. There was a thunderstorm outside, which is why it was fortunate the Warriors practiced tonight in the University of Houston complex. They arrive: * * * * * * […]

QB commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2011

Quarterback Ikaika Woolsey, a 2011 graduate of Salesian Pride High in California, has accepted a scholarship offer from the Warriors and will enroll at UH in January. Woolsey, who is 6 feet 1 and 205 pounds, currently is enrolled as a part-time student at City College of San Francisco. As a grayshirt, he is allowed to practice with the CCSF football team but not play in any games. He turned down an opportunity to be CCSF’s starting quarterback because he […]

Tuesday's practice

By Stephen Tsai on September 27, 2011

From today’s practice: • Miah Ostrowski tried to give it a go today. But his right foot still prevented him from making cuts without pain. He will not play in Saturday’s game against Louisiana Tech. • Breyden Torres-Keohokapu replaces Ostrowski on the 66-player travel roster. • Chauncy Winchester-Makaianai practiced today — at right tackle. He was the No. 1 right guard exiting training camp before suffering a sprained right knee the week before the Sept. 3 season opener. Head coach […]

Moniz wins WAC honor

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2011

As expected, Bryant Moniz has been named the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Playing only the first half of a 56-14 bashing of UC Davis, Moniz threw seven TD passes — setting a UH record  for a half and tying an NCAA mark — and amassed 424 passing yards, eighth highest in the nation this season. * * * * * Happy birthday to UHFan808.
