Lee won't be retained

By Stephen Tsai on December 30, 2011

Assistant head coach Cal Lee has been told he will not be retained on the UH coaching staff after his contract expires on March 31. Lee has been at UH for nine seasons, coaching linebackers and defensive ends. He was the Warriors’ defensive coordinator in 2008 and 2009, Greg McMackin’s first two seasons as UH head coach. Lee’s success at Saint Louis School is well-documented. That leaves three coaches from the 2011 staff — offensive coordinator Nick Rolovich, defensive line […]

Forward thinking

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2011

EL PASO — Norm Chow noted that he has been in Hawaii only one day during his one-week tenure as UH head coach. To be precise, it was a 13-hour trip. Chow, who will remain on the mainland for at least another week, will have telephone interviews with some members of the 2011 coaching staff next week, then meet with the players Jan. 10. The Warriors will begin hosting recruits Jan. 13. Chow said offensive linemen top the wish list. […]

Passing interest

By Stephen Tsai on December 28, 2011

If you hire him, they will come. Norm Chow’s reputation as an elite quarterback coach is proving to be attractive. Ohio State quarterback Taylor Graham told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he is set to transfer to UH. Of course, it is not yet a done deal. For one thing, this is a dead period, and UH must wait until next week to approach Graham. There’s also the matter of the school being closed this week. But signs are favorable. As […]

Wait 'til next year

By Stephen Tsai on December 27, 2011

Norm Chow said he won’t be hiring any new coaches until the new year. He said he has interviewed some interested candidates, as well as spoken with a couple of members from the 2011 UH coaching staff. But he said he won’t make any decisions until after speaking with more coaches and reviewing formal applications. Chow arrived in El Paso yesterday to coach Utah’s offense in Saturday’s Sun Bowl. He said he hopes to have the “majority” of his staff […]

Speeding up Pro Day

By Stephen Tsai on December 26, 2011

Hawaii’s pro day, which is usually held a few weeks before the NFL draft, is expected to be moved to early March in 2012. Almost every FBS school has a pro day in which its draft-eligible players perform running, jumping, weight-lifting and football drills in front of NFL scouts. Because of UH’s isolation, its pro day was held in Carson, Calif., and bracketed with the pro days for USC and UCLA. While that schedule attracted large attendance from scouts, it […]

Ever after

Defensive tackle Kaniela Tuipulotu and linebacker Aaron Brown have started their post-Warrior plans. Tuipulotu signed with agent Kenny Zuckerman, whose clientele includes AJ Hawk, Arian Foster, Davone Bess and Greg Salas. Tuipulotu said he will be training at Athletes’ Performance at the Home Depot Center. Brown has signed with Michael Hoffman, a Southern California-based agent who represents former Warrior Alex Green. * * * * * This would have been John Collins’ birthday. We miss you.

Cost sharing

By Stephen Tsai on December 23, 2011

When it was first announced UH would pay the travel costs for Mountain West football teams to play here, phrases such as  “cost sharing” were used. As we’ve learned, that would be like a car-pool arrangement in which UH always provides the car. During yesterday’s reception at Washington Place, Gov. Abercrombie once against emphasized that the state and Hawaii Tourism Authority should contribute to the travel subsidies because UH events impact the state’s economy. Abercrombie would like to see real […]
