The Ikei way

By Stephen Tsai on March 6, 2012

Once again, Chad Ikei trained the breakout performer at UH’s pro day. Corey Paredes’ football skills were never in doubt; he has overcome a humble start (walk-on status) and numerous injuries to become one of the Warriors’ top tacklers. But his speed and jumping ability were a pleasant surprise at pro day. What makes Ikei’s program successful — ’round-the-clock supervision of diet and workouts — would be difficult to replicate for a student-athlete needing to balance academic responsibilities. Paredes, in […]

Masch is ready for audition

By Stephen Tsai on March 4, 2012

Zach Masch is now a middle man. “I have abs,” Masch said, laughing, a result of intensive workouts at the Triple Threat Performance facility in Arizona. Masch said he weighed 280 pounds last night — a weight he hopes to carry into tomorrow’s pro day at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. He said he can gain more weight, if necessary, but he feels fit enough for the speed, jumping and weight-lifting sessions at the combine-like event. “Training has […]

The world according to AARP

By Stephen Tsai on March 3, 2012

The beauty of old age — and I just received my AARP card — is diminished panic. It would be easy to believe there is a sense of hopelessness as the basketball Rainbow Warriors and volleyball Warriors continue their losing streaks. But sports is about second chances, and regardless of how both teams do this weekend, their league’s postseason tournaments offer renewed optimism. Odd as it may seem, both teams still are in contention for national titles. Maybe both teams […]

Regaining his Mo-jo

By Stephen Tsai on March 1, 2012

After training the past few weeks in Boca Raton, Fla., former UH quarterback Bryant Moniz departs today for California ahead of Monday’s UH pro day. Moniz should feel comfortable in California. He spent a year at Fresno City College before enrolling at UH, and his daughter’s name is Cali. In Florida, Moniz’s workouts were divided between football drills and cardio exercises. He said he weighs 210, a 5-pound gain since his last game in November. He said his surgically repaired […]

Warrior auditions

By Stephen Tsai on February 29, 2012

Head coach Norm Chow said he has not decided how many walk-ons will be added to the roster following yesterday’s tryout session at the Ching complex. There were more than 90 UH-Manoa students who participated. Assistant coach Phil Rauscher was the on-field coordinator. “Obviously, it’s tough to make (the roster) because we already have our guys in place, but you never know,” Chow said. The criteria, according to Chow, is: “Anybody who fits.” Chow said the most pressing need is […]

Lee services set; Colt to CFL

By Stephen Tsai on February 28, 2012

The memorial service for Thomas Lee Sr. is set for March 7 at Diamond Head Memorial Park. He was the father of football coaches Tommy Lee, Ron Lee and Cal Lee. He would have turned 95 on March 8. Deepest sympathies to the Lee family. * * * * * Colt Brennan called the WB to say he was grateful for the opportunity to continue his football career.  He signed a two-year contract with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (great name, by […]
