Spain transfers to JC

Head coach Norm Chow said Kevin Spain is transferring to Scottsdale Community College in Arizona. Spain did not play in his first UH season, in 2010, after undergoing shoulder surgery. Meatoga to Bengals; tryout for Hansen

Former UH defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, who was released by the Washington Redskins this past weekend, was claimed on waivers today by the Cincinnati Bengals. Meatoga said he leaves tomorrow for the Bengals’ mini-camp. It’s back to business . . . • For head coach Norm Chow, who returned to Honolulu last night. He didn’t sleep much because he was back in his office before dawn this morning. Chow is learning that the head coaching position, at UH, comes with a lot of responsibilities. Pollard aces tryout, gets free-agent contract

After the second day of the three-day tryout, the New York Jets had seen enough. They offered former UH wide receiver Royce Pollard a free-agent contract. That means Pollard goes on the Jets’ 80-player active roster, with a chance to compete as a wideout, third receiver and kickoff returner. Head coach Norm Chow has made arrangements with two Los Angeles-area high schools to serve  as practice sites during road trips this season. The plan calls for L.A. to serve as a hub city. On the week of a road game, the Warriors will practice on Thursday morning at UH, then depart for L.A., where they will stay overnight and then conduct a light practice at one of the prep schools on Friday morning. Shutter can train with teammates

Quarterback Cayman Shutter will remain on suspension from team activities until at least mid-July, but he will be allowed to participate with teammates in unsupervised workouts. Head coach Norm Chow said the players are on their own for those workouts, which lead to the opening of training camp on Aug. 3. Shutter was arrested on March 29 on suspicion of drunken driving.
