Mr. Wright

By Stephen Tsai on June 2, 2012

As UH students and football teammates a dozen years ago, Matt Wright aspired to be a coach while Craig Stutzmann planned to pursue a business career. “What ended up happening was I went into business and Craig went into coaching,” Wright said. “In the end, we’re both coaching.” On Thursday, Wright was named Saint Louis’ head football coach. “I enjoy working with the kids,” said Wright, who also teaches business, marketing and English classes at Saint Louis. A decade ago, […]

Former UH linebacker Aaron Brown today signed a four-year contract with the St. Louis Rams. The Rams selected Brown in the seventh round of  April’s NFL draft. “We finally got it done,” said Brown, who will receive an undisclosed signing bonus. Brown will earn a minimum of $2.01 million in base salary over the life of the contract, according to the NFL pay formula — $390,000 for a rookie in 2012, $465,000 the second year, $540,000 the third year, and […]

Base ball

By Stephen Tsai on May 31, 2012

The Warriors are close to completing a deal in which they would conduct the second half of their training camp at Joint Base Pearl Harbor/Hickam. The deal is awaiting approval on some aspects, such as insurance. The Warriors would stay on the base (two to a room), use the practice and training facilities, and eat at the cafeteria. The Warriors will be staying in the dormitories through Summer Session II. But they have to vacate after that because the school […]

Working it out

The Warriors’ OTAs started this past Monday, although that was merely a formality. The players have been training on their own since the Warrior Bowl, even when they’re not in Hawaii. Here’s quarterback David Graves’ workout headquarters: * * * * * Here are linebacker George Daily-Lyles, former UH quarterback Corey Nielsen, and linebacker T.J. Taimatuia: * * * * * This is an e-mail/photo from Hawkpeter (who trains UH’s Australian players): Yesterday, Blake Muir and I went and visited […]

Delay of game

By Stephen Tsai on May 29, 2012

Three members of the 2012 recruiting will be delaying the start of their Warrior football careers. Receiver John Ursua and lineman Gus Lavaka will be going on church missions. They will be back for the 2014 season. Lavaka said he has not received his assignment yet, but he hopes to serve in another country. He said he would like to learn another language. Cornerback Anthony Pierce is expected to grayshirt as a way of improving physically before joining the Warriors […]

Corner route

By Stephen Tsai on May 28, 2012

Justin Turner, a former 5-star cornerback who was on Michigan’s 2009 team, is on track to earning an associate degree in July and joining the Warriors for the start of training camp on Aug. 1. Turner had a 2.8 GPA this past trimester. He will take three classes during an eight-week session that begins in June. Turner, who works out daily with a personal trainer, is technically a free agent. And even though he has received interest since he began […]

Nothing but net

It’s the middle of a three-day weekend, let’s talk volleyball: * * * * * It is confirmed that Drew Durni, a 6-3 outside hitter from Frontier High near Buffalo, will be joining the volleyball Warriors this coming year. Here’s his highlight video: Drew Durni. * * * * * Opposite attacker Harrison Carroll has secured his release and is expected to transfer to an NAIA school, where he should receive more playing opportunities. Carroll, who was UH’s primary right-side […]

Generation Next

By Stephen Tsai on May 26, 2012

Congrats to Pac-Five linebacker Joshua Donovan who will participate in MPI’s graduation ceremony today. This summer, he is expected to be added to the UH roster as a walk-on. The Warriors are in the process of finalizing the 102-player roster for training camp. Donovan — whose father does some sort of administrative work on the Lower Campus and whose mother is kinda shy —  will be joining offensive lineman Tui‘atua Tuiasosopo as a second-generation Warrior. Tuiasososopo, who had left the […]
