Yap out with foot injury

By Stephen Tsai on March 27, 2013

The Warriors’ best pass rusher — defensive end Beau Yap — will miss at least the rest of spring practice after suffering a fracture in his right foot, head coach Norm Chow confirmed today. Yap underwent surgery this week. He suffered the injury during defensive drills. It is not known if he will be ready when the Warriors open training camp in August. The Warriors have struggled with their depth this spring. Iuta Tepa, a transfer from UCLA, recently underwent […]

Lutu soars at NFL workout

By Stephen Tsai on March 26, 2013

Former UH safety Leroy Lutu Jr. put up impressive numbers at this past weekend’s NFL regional combine at the Seattle Seahawks’ training facility in Renton, Wash. Here are his stats: • Vertical jump: 42 inches • Broad jump: 10 feet, 7 inches • Pro-agility shuttle: 4.1 seconds • 40-yard dash: 4.60 seconds All of those marks were better than his numbers at last week’s pro day in San Diego. Timing and distance were likely factors in the difference. For pro […]

Calling “shotgun”

By Stephen Tsai on March 25, 2013

Attendees at last week’s spring practices might have noticed something interesting. The Warriors were in the shotgun formation for every offensive play. And that is the theme of the spring: ASATT (all shotgun, all the time). UH coach Norm Chow said the Warriors will be in that formation for the remaining 13 practices of spring training. The Warriors resume workouts after this week’s spring break. The quarterbacks “like it,” Chow said, “and I like what the kids like.” Shotgun snaps […]

Northern exposure

Cayman Shutter took a significant step toward  a pro career when he participated in this weekend’s CFL combine in Toronto. Here’s a clip: Shutter video. By participating in the combine, Shutter forfeits his amateur status and ensures the expected:  He won’t be returning to UH for the 2013 season. Shutter has the arm, football IQ and overall IQ, and Canadian citizenship to boost his stock for the upcoming CFL draft. Here are Shutter’s combine results: Bench press: 16 reps of […]

It’s all mime

In the 1966 Batman movie, the caped crusader found a lit bomb. Every place he tried to dispose it, there were people or animals. To which Batman quipped: “Some days you just can’t get rid of a bomb.” That movie scene was conjured this past week when the Warriors tried to conduct spring practices. The Warriors were told they could not conduct their 6 a.m. practices under Ching field’s lights because of a scheduling conflict. That meant going to the […]

Spring break

By Stephen Tsai on March 22, 2013

Spring break begins on Monday, which means that today at UH … hey, where’d everybody go? Let’s hope enough people stick around to open the arena for tonight’s volleyball match between UH and Pacific. * * * * * Offensive line coach Chris Naeole was expected to add a different element to the coaching staff. One asset is sportsman. Naeole is leading a group, including graduate assistant Jordan Wynn, on a hunting trip on Molokai this weekend. Wynn, a former […]

Thursday’s practice

By Stephen Tsai on March 21, 2013

This morning, the Warriors finished their  final spring practice before going on a one-week hiatus for spring break. Quarterbacks Taylor Graham and Ikaika Woolsey threw well, particularly in the quick-change drill during which the Warriors tried  to run three plays each minute. Of note: • Defensive end Beau Yap underwent X-rays for a possible sprained right ankle. He was on crutches as a precaution. Yap, the Warriors’ best pass rusher, was not expected to be used much this spring. The […]

Airhead

By Stephen Tsai on March 20, 2013

While going from airport to airport today, I had this nagging feeling I was forgetting something. Leave something in the rental car? Forget to take the heart meds? Think, Stephen, think. And then it dawned on me: I forgot to write a blog item. So, oops, my bad. Owe you guys one. Meanwhile, please entertain yourselves. I’m off to UH. * * * * * OK, in honor of PowderPuff’s 29th birthday, on “3” let’s all scream. One. Two. Three. […]
