True grit

So much for an easy summer. The Warriors gather at 5:30 in the morning ahead of the UH-supervised conditioning drills: * * * * * Just before 6, they run — never walk — onto the Ching complex field: * * * * * Then for the next hour, the Warriors are in near-constant motion: * * * * * To break up the routine, there was a tug-o-war competition: * * * * * Here’s a link to Brenden […]

Graham, Matagiese to promote UH

By Stephen Tsai on June 18, 2013

Head coach Norm Chow confirmed that quarterback Taylor Graham and defensive tackle Siasau “Saui” Matagiese will represent the Rainbow Warriors at next month’s Mountain West Conference media preview in Las Vegas. Graham’s selection was not surprising even though he has yet to start an NCAA game. Graham was at Ohio State for three semesters before transferring to UH in January 2012. He redshirted in 2012, but exited this past spring training as the No. 1 quarterback. Graham will be a […]

Receiver is top candidate for GA job

By Stephen Tsai on June 17, 2013

Former Utah wide receiver Luke Matthews has emerged as the leading candidate for a graduate assistant’s job on offense. Matthews completed his NCAA career in 2012, having played in 50 of 51 games with the Utes. He had 30 career starts. More importantly, Matthews was named to his conference’s all-academic team in each of the four years he played. Utah coach Kyle Whittingham had offered Matthews an administrative job on the Utes staff. UH is undergoing a lengthy vetting process […]

Father’s Day

By Stephen Tsai on June 16, 2013

The Warrior coaches received a special Father’s Day present with Waianae defensive tackle Kennedy Tulimasealii’s official UH acceptance. Last month, Tulimasealii met the NCAA requirements to compete this coming season, but he still needed to gain admission into UH. He has been notified of his UH acceptance. * * * * * The five Warrior football clinics on high school campuses drew nearly 500 participants overall, exceeding the total for the three camps held at UH last year. This year’s […]

Aquaman

By Stephen Tsai on June 15, 2013

Defensive end George Daily-Lyles is leading a camp this summer that has nothing to do with football but everything to do with teamwork and development. Daily-Lyles is the host of a kids’ camp at the Waikiki Aquarium. The curriculum is focused on sea life through group-oriented activities. The camp is part of Daily-Lyles’ studies in family resources. He is scheduled to earn a degree in that field in December. Daily-Lyles adjusts his off-season training around his camp schedule. He often […]

Sand sculpting

Like a typical UH student, Diocemy Saint Juste spends a lot of his time at the beach. But the beach is in Florida, where the weather is a low of muggy and high of sweltering, and his activities involve a series of sprints. His indoor time is spent in the weight room. The cross-training has resulted in a stronger build (he’s added eight pounds) and maintained speed (sub-4.5 seconds over 40 yards). As Sly & The Family Stone  once asked: […]

Windfall linebacker

By Stephen Tsai on June 13, 2013

Imagine doing the laundry, and then finding $20 you forgot you had. That’s a bad metaphor to explain how linebacker Tevita Lataimua will be joining the Rainbow Warriors this summer. Lataimua, who played at the College of San Mateo last year, signed a letter of intent with the Warriors in December 2012 with the intent of enrolling at UH for the 2013 spring semester. But he did not meet the requirements to join in January. There appeared to be no […]

Blue collar added

By Stephen Tsai on June 12, 2013

Every football team needs a grinder, a workmanlike player who can be used at several positions. The Warriors might have found one in Max Broman, a walk-on from Alta High in Utah. Broman was a running back and linebacker in high school. He will be joining the Warriors mostly to compete on special teams. He is expected to be on the 104-player roster for training camp. Click on his name for video highlights: Max Broman * * * * * […]
