Status checks

By Stephen Tsai on September 22, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors could learn as early as today the health statuses of several players. Quarterback Taylor Graham (left shoulder), running back Joey Iosefa (left foot) and linebacker Julian Gener (right elbow) appear to have suffered the most serious injuries. Tight end Harold Moleni and defensive ends Beau Yap and Iuta Tepa reportedly suffered concussions. Although the Warriors are traveling today, it is considered to be an off day. They will have meetings, conditioning sessions and a light practice tomorrow.

Game day: Nevada

By Stephen Tsai on September 21, 2013

RENO — Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo will not play today. He was in sweats during warmups. Freshman Tyler Stewart gets the start. UH freshman receivers Marcus Kemp and Keith Kirkwood, both of whom worked extensively with the No. 1 unit this week, are expected to start. Iuta Tepa is expected to start at defensive right end.

Reno, baby!

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2013

OK, “Reno, baby!” isn’t as catchy as the other Nevada’s cry. Still, it’s a nice day in Reno for a walk-through. The Rainbow Warriors arrived in town last night and after several activities — meals, meetings, studying and shopping — they will have a walk-through session at Mackay Stadium. Pictures will be posted later (unless somebody wins MegaBucks. But “somebody” will make sure to invite each of you to his retirement party).

Time to rock in Boulder

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2013

The blog host doesn’t get a vote. But if he did, he would mark, “Heck, yes!” on the Proposition 10/19 question: Should the Rainbow Warriors accept an offer to play Colorado in Boulder on Oct. 19? First, it’s football, and playing one more game is better than staying put at 12. I mean, face it, how thrilling was last week’s bye? Paint the town beige, anyone? Then there’s Colorado’s latest offer of a $600,000 appearance fee.  If we were to […]

Prolific RB commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2013

Harris “Home Run” Ross, a running back from Pittsburg (Calif.) High told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a scholarship offer from the Rainbow Warriors. Ross, who is 5 feet 11 and 198 pounds, rushed for 464 yards and seven touchdowns in a game this past weekend. The performance exceeded his goal of a 300-plus yards and seven touchdowns Ross has received inquiries from schools, including Washington, the past few days. But he said he remains faithful to the Warriors. […]

Pu‘u-Robinson gets medical benefit

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2013

Tight end Jordan Pu‘u-Robinson has been approved for a medical hardship that will allow him to play as a sixth-year senior in 2014. Pu‘u-Robinson, who suffered a shoulder injury this summer, will make his 2013 debut in Saturday’s game against Nevada. * * * * * Cornerback Brian Clay has requested a release from his football scholarship, citing the health of his mother, who is suffering from MS. It appears he would like to transfer to a school in the […]

Field work

By Stephen Tsai on September 16, 2013

After two days of rest, the Rainbow Warriors are back in business, with meetings this morning, and a weight-lifting session and practice this afternoon. They installed outlines of the game plans last week, and will make amendments in practices tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday. They depart Thursday afternoon ahead of Saturday’s road game against Nevada.

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on September 15, 2013

• Head coach Norm Chow today reiterated that the players injured in the Oregon State — Brenden Daley, Trayvon Henderson and Kawika Borden — should be ready to play in this week’s game against Nevada. • Still, there is no timetable for the return of receiver Allen Sampson, who still is not 100 percent from a hamstring injury. Sampson could be an option as a kickoff returner when he heals. • The schedule could have been a lot tougher for […]
