Tuesday check-ups

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2013

Quarterback Taylor Graham, who missed the past two games because of an injury to his left (non-throwing) shoulder took some reps in practice today. It’s still iffy whether he will be available for Saturday’s road game against UNLV. Whether Graham is ready or not, expect: 1) Sean Schroeder and Ikaika Woolsey to split most of the reps this weeks; 2) Woolsey to have a larger role in this week’s game, and 3) Jeremy Higgins to be included on the 64-player […]

Back to the …

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2013

It dawned on me that I’m a 53-year-old grandfather who has no idea what’s a drawing board. Is that paper on an easel? Or the easel? Is it the white board? Or the sketchbook? (While we’re at it, I have no idea what a “pipsqueak” is, although I was called that many times in my life. But I digress.) Anyway, the Rainbow Warriors are back to the proverbial drawing board today. The offense and defense will alternate lifting sessions and […]

What now?

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2013

It was a tough loss for the Rainbow Warriors, who gave up too many big plays and didn’t make enough of their own in a 37-27 loss to San Jose State. It will be an interesting — and short — week of adjustments. The Warriors depart Thursday afternoon for Las Vegas. We’re all adults here (at least chronologically), so what adjustments do you think the Warriors should make? And, no, “scoring more points” is considered an incomplete answer. * * […]

Game day: San Jose State

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2013

Two teams desperate for a victory — San Jose State and UH — face off today at Aloha Stadium. The Spartans, who won 11 games in 2012, are 1-3 after losing three in row. Despite last week’s near-historic comeback, the Rainbow Warriors are winless in four games this season. * * * * * If anything, the Warriors are a team with good manners. After eating dinner at KCC last night, they threw away their disposable plates and utensils, then […]

Walk this way

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2013

For most teams, Football Fridays usually are quasi rest days in which physical activities are limited to walk-through sessions at the game’s stadium. What started as a change-of-pace and now will become a tradition, the Rainbow Warriors will have a 40-minute, limited-contact practice on Ching field today. The first play is at 6 p.m. — the scheduled kickoff time for tomorrow’s game. The practice will enable the Warriors to finalize plays, install some new ones, and, in general, provide more […]

This Spud’s for you

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2013

Don “Spud” Botelho is proof that anything is possible in football. He was a quarterback, running back, punter and kicker on a UH team that upset Nebraska, 6-0, in Lincoln in 1955. When the UH football program went on hiatus, he helped bring it back, in 1961. Botelho was head coach of the Pac-Five teams that won two Oahu Prep Bowl titles in the 1980s. His former players included Joe Onosai, Pio Sagapolutele, Leroy Lutu, Garrett Gabriel and Salevaa Atisanoe […]

Graham cleared

By Stephen Tsai on October 2, 2013

UH head coach Norm Chow said quarterback Taylor Graham had been medically cleared to practice. Whether Graham practices today — or is healthy enough to play Saturday — is another matter. Graham did not play against Fresno State because of a subluxed left (non-throwing) shoulder. * * * * * We always knew former UH quarterback David Graves would do well. Here’s his business card:

Seeing red

By Stephen Tsai on October 1, 2013

In training camp, one of the treats was to watch defenses try to figure a way to tackle running back Penitito Faalologo, who appears to be shorter and heavier than his listed dimensions of 5-11 and 250 pounds. Recruited as a linebacker, he moved to defensive end and then to offense. Faalologo was held out of the first four games. Yesterday, he said he will redshirt this season. Barring unexpected circumstances, with a third of the season in the books, […]
