Game day: Navy

By Stephen Tsai on November 9, 2013

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Norm Chow addressed the estimated 600 UH fans who attended today’s tailgate party: * * * * * It’s back to the future for the Rainbow Warriors as they face former players (Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo and offensive coordinator Ivin Jasper) and the triple-option offense. UH’s goal: Stop Noah Copeland, a beast of a fullback. Quarterback Keenan Reynolds is very good, too. * * * * * J.J. Unga of the Baltimore Ravens was at yesterday’s practice: […]

The Rainbow Warriors broke up the routine with a tour through Washington D.C., which included stops outside the White House and at the Lincoln Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Korean War Veterans Memorial.

Bowie State of mind

By Stephen Tsai on November 7, 2013

BOWIE, Md. — The Rainbow Warriors had a brisk, 90-minute practice today at Bowie State. With the 64-player roster limit, they had second-team units serving as scout players. That also meant doubling assignments. Media relations director Derek Inouchi became “Bobby Boucher”: * * * * * DB coach Daronte’ Jones used to coach at Bowie State: * * * * * Nose tackle Moses Samia: * * * * * Defensive lineman Kennedy Tulimasealii: * * * * * Former […]

Right direction

The Rainbow Warriors are scheduled to practice this morning at the University of Utah, then depart to Maryland ahead of Saturday’s game against Navy. The Warriors have made the most of their time in Salt Lake City. They’ve had practices, meetings, study hall and numerous meals. “This trip has been good for us,” quarterback Sean Schroeder said. “I feel we’re becoming even closer. We’ll see Saturday. We’re going to give everything we have, I guarantee you that, like we do […]

That’s rich

By Stephen Tsai on November 5, 2013

It was 1999 when former UH basketball player Micah Kroeger and his future wife walked into our sports department and noticed my desktop computer. “It doesn’t have a mouse,” she said. Then she noticed: “The screen only has two colors.” There was no need to mention that the computer did not have access to the Internet. And that was the end of ignorant bliss. We were technologically poor. The Rainbow Warriors are learning how the Pac-12 lives while training this […]

Chow: “I’m not going to quit ever”

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2013

Salt Lake City, Utah — Insisting his public comments were misinterpreted, University of Hawaii football coach Norm Chow said he is “fully capable” of doing his job and has no intention of quitting. “I’m not going to quit ever,” said Chow, whose Rainbow Warriors are 0-8 in the second season of his  five-year contract. “I preached not quitting to these kids. You expect me to quit? Are you crazy?” Chow sparked controversy when he told a group of reporters “I’m too […]

DT’s status uncertain

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2013

The Rainbow Warriors should have a better understanding today about defensive tackle Saui Matagiese’s knee injury. It was feared that he suffered ligament damage. He will undergo an MRI in Salt Lake City. He is expected to stay with the team the remainder of this 10-day trip. If he is unavailable to play against Navy, freshman Kennedy Tulimasealii will be promoted to his spot. Matagiese is one of the undisputed leaders of the team. His story — a Kauai native […]

Game day: Utah State

LOGAN — Sure, the Rainbow Warriors arrived at the hotel at 2:35 this morning, and who knows when they got to go ne-ne. But this is truly a game day, one of the few early-afternoon ones. Cool weather, 2 p.m. kickoff, and newbies amazed they can see their breath. This is why they invented football. * * * * * Hey, I was hungry waiting for the team to show up:
