Schroeder to play in all-star game

By Stephen Tsai on January 13, 2014

Former UH quarterback Sean Schroeder has been invited to compete in Saturday’s NFLPA Collegiate Bowl at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. With an assist from UH coach Norm Chow, Schroeder received the invitation this past weekend. “Obviously, he has a lot of connections in the NFL,” Schroeder said. “He called over there, too, I know, and that obviously helped out quite a bit.” The NFL Players Association and ESPN sponsor the game. Practices tomorrow through Thursday will be shown […]

Making the grade

By Stephen Tsai on January 12, 2014

The Rainbow Warrior football team seeks to continue a winning streak — in the classroom — when the spring semester opens tomorrow. This past semester, the Warriors attained a collective 2.9 GPA. Some of the credit goes to a man that few — if any — of the players ever met. The Nagatani Academic Center isn’t just another campus building. It is a tribute to a humble man who cherished words and deeds, who was smart enough to help others […]

Court presence

By Stephen Tsai on January 11, 2014

It doesn’t matter the sport. It is a big deal whenever Hawaii and UCLA meet in anything. Adding to the appeal of tonight’s Outrigger Volleyball Invitational are: • UCLA has a rarity — a 7-foot player. But opposite Robert Page isn’t just there to block and hit over the block. He also has some defensive skills. Against Ohio State, Page had four digs. • Every so often there is a UH opponent who is so good for so long the […]

By Stephen Tsai on January 9, 2014

Coach Norm Chow said wide receiver Chris Gant has been invited to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl. The game will be played Saturday, Jan. 18, at the StubHub Center at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson, Calif. Former NFL head coaches Dennis Green and Dick Vermeil will be coaching in the all-star game.

Aggressive move

By Stephen Tsai on January 8, 2014

A few years ago, a UH defensive plan was designed with a hybrid  in mind. He would be used as a stand-up defensive end — the “joker,” the “Chad Brown-type” — who could create chaos because of his unpredictability. Is he a pass-rusher? Is he a drop-back linebacker? Will he be aligned on the strong or weak side? That was the goal, although it didn’t have as much traction as hoped. In the search for the next UH defensive coordinator, […]

Clune to lead UH defense

By Stephen Tsai on January 7, 2014

Utah State linebacker coach Kevin Clune has been named the Rainbow Warriors’ defensive coordinator. Thom Kaumeyer, who served as DC the past two seasons, was told last month his one-year contract would not be renewed when it expires in March. Clune completed his fifth season with the Aggies, who ranked 12th nationally in total defense this past season.

And what’s more …

By Stephen Tsai on January 6, 2014

Back in the day, extra notes were added to the end of sports stories in the category, “And what’s more …” (The ellipses were key because they allowed for easy trimming for the story to fit the space.) Next year, the Mountain West and four other conferences will be labeled the “Group of Five,” with that conglomeration’s highest-ranked team earning a berth in an elite postseason bowl. Yes, the Group of Five — which means the MWC, which also means […]
