Last travel day

By Stephen Tsai on November 30, 2014

Today is the final travel day of the season, which means we’re in hiatus until this afternoon. See you then.

Game day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on November 29, 2014

Here are some things to ponder: > If UH beats Fresno State, San Jose State beats San Diego State and UNLV beats Nevada, then the Warriors win the West Division and play in next week’s MWC title game. > Consider a worst-case scenario in which quarterback Ikaika Woolsey can’t play in the second half. Will UH burn Beau Reilly’s redshirt year by playing him for only a half? > If Woolsey plays well today, shouldn’t he be considered the No. […]

The Drive

By Stephen Tsai on November 28, 2014

The Warriors today will make the 229-mile drive from Manhattan Beach, where they stayed since Wednesday night, to Fresno. For their last trip to Fresno, they pulled into — and out of — an In-N-Out Burger. Apparently, the popular eatery has difficulty accommodating a 90-member party. We’ll have pictures later from today’s modified practice.

Early-bird special

By Stephen Tsai on November 27, 2014

It will be Thanksgiving SoCal-style for the Warriors today. They are scheduled to practice at an L.A.-area high school, then have Thanksgiving dinner at the hotel where they are staying. Traveling a day earlier than usual makes sense on a busy Holiday weekend. One media member was stranded in San Francisco when the pilot did not show up for the flight to Fresno. The member learned that he would not be able to get a guaranteed seat on a Fresno […]

Warriors wrap up Manoa practices

By Stephen Tsai on November 26, 2014

The Warriors will conduct their final regular-season practice in Manoa today, then depart this afternoon for the road trip against Fresno State. Scott Harding will be held out of practice as a precaution against numerous ailments, but is expected to play this Saturday. He also did not practice last week but was used as a punter, punt returner and receiver against UNLV. * * * * * Daniel Mar Chong, a former UH assistant athletic trainer, has been credited with […]

The merits of scouts

By Stephen Tsai on November 25, 2014

To be sure, UH says farewell to its senior student-athletes like no other school. Lei, family and friends, game-winning touchdown … With the Warriors ending their season on the road this weekend, tomorrow’s final Manoa practice is essentially the season-ender for the more than 35 scout players. The redshirts and developing players who form the scout teams attend the same number of meetings and run the same number of gassers as the depth-chart players, but they don’t get the payoff […]

It’s not over …

By Stephen Tsai on November 24, 2014

KHON sports director Rob DeMello figured it out. UH media relations director Derek Inouchi confirmed it. Yes, if Hawaii, San Jose State and UNLV all win this coming weekend, Hawaii would win the West Division and play in the Mountain West Conference’s championship game. Not sure how it computes. (When they were explaining it to me, I had that same blank stare I had during a year of calculus.) But they’re both smart guys, and it appears the drama extends […]

“The Catch”

On a play known as “Frisco,” the Warriors defeated UNLV on Ikaika Woolsey’s 20-yard pass to Marcus Kemp as time expired: Click on this: “The Catch” video”
