Back to life

By Stephen Tsai on January 15, 2015

The recruiting “dead period” ended this past midnight, and the UH coaches are hitting the road for home visits. It’s a two-part plan: 1) Secure the players who already pledged, and 2) Get new commits. The first of three recruiting weekends begins tomorrow.

AD committee should consider 6 more

By Stephen Tsai on January 14, 2015

The trouble with Ben Jay was he was asked to hit the ground running but nobody gave him a map. It’s difficult to be the new guy in town who meets the power brokers and, soon after, has to ask them for money. “Nice to meet you … is that the name on the check you’ll be writing?” Which is why a few names need to be added to the recently announced search committee for the next UH athletic director. Hall to women’s VB; Warriors ready for recruiting run

By Stephen Tsai on January 12, 2015

Jeff Hall, a good coach and a great guy, is moving two offices down in switching from associate head coach for men’s volleyball to associate HC for women’s volleyball and head coach of the sand volleyball team. “It’s bittersweet,” said Hall, who had a role in recruiting every player on the Warriors’ roster. The Warriors have depth, talent and are “in a great position to make a run for the championship,” Hall said. Because of HR rules and such, there […]

Campbell High strong-safety Solomon Matautia told the Star-Adveriser/Warrior Beat he will accept a football scholarship from the Warriors. He initially made an oral commitment to Oregon State. Here’s the early story: Matautia to join UH * * * * * Ohio State coach Urban Meyer: “I think the culture that Oregon has created is something I’ve studied in great detail, and I say culture because that’s what it is. Ohio State has this culture, and so does Oregon, and so […]

Big time in Big D

DALLAS — Sorry for the infrequent and brief posts, but it’s been a crazy morning. It started at 8:30 a.m. (4:30 Hawaii time) with the Oregon interview session on an indoor football field in the Dallas Convention Center. Marcus Mariota, of course, was on one of four podiums underneath television lights. He easily had the most reporters surrounding him. Asking a question was like merging into traffic: You wait for a nano-second pause and jump right in. Some managed to […]

Drawing support

By Stephen Tsai on January 9, 2015

Norm Chow received support from two College Football Hall of Fame coaches this morning. Lou Holtz and Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, who was inducted this morning, both insisted Chow will build the Warrior program. “I thought he did a good job this year,” Holtz said. Snyder was introduced at the news conference as the “architect of the greatest turnaround in the history of college football.” Snyder inherited a program that was winless in the previous 27 games. Snyder said […]
