Max opportunity

By Stephen Tsai on February 16, 2015

Max Broman is one of those hard-working, never-complain guys that every football team needs but might not be able to put on scholarship. Broman, who was raised in Utah, gave it the old college try when he served as a scout running back while redshirting as a freshman in 2013. Even though Utah residents are eligible to participate in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program, in which a non-resident pays 150 percent the price of a resident’s tuition, that still […]

About the play-callers

By Stephen Tsai on February 15, 2015

Ever have that feeling you forgot to do something? Think, Stephen, think. Oh, yeah, I forgot to write a blog post after power was restored at 4 p.m yesterday. Anyway, here’s the deal on the new play-callers: Tom Mason, defense > Preferred style: Attacking out of a 3-4 with fire-zone blitzes. He estimated SMU ran pressure schemes 60 to 70 percent of the time. > But he can: Go with the 4-3 scheme he ran when he was linebackers coach […]

Ppd. because of weather

By Stephen Tsai on February 14, 2015

Because the weather knocked out power four times — Four! — and I’m waiting for the milk to spoil, the new blog post will be up this afternoon. Apologies. And how about HECO replacing wooden poles in windy areas?

Bailey, Mason hired as play-callers

By Stephen Tsai on February 13, 2015

As expected, Don Bailey and Tom Mason have been hired to run the Warriors’ offense and defense, respectively. Here’s the skinny: > It will remain a collective effort to craft the offensive game plan. Bailey will be the play-caller. He also will coach the quarterbacks. > In addition to calling the defensive plays, Mason is expected to coach either the safeties or cornerbacks. UH is expected to use both a 4-3 and a 3-4 as bases. > Bailey and Mason […]

Cutting remarks

By Stephen Tsai on February 12, 2015

We know what’s happening. UH’s athletic department needs money — not for football, the only sport that is profitable, but to sustain the other sports. And because UH isn’t in any billionaire’s will, the money will have to come from the Legislature and Upper Campus. In a report to lawmakers on Tuesday and an address to the Board of Regents today, UH’s message is: We need money. That’s a good thing to admit. It’s hard to ask for help without […]

Mat drills

By Stephen Tsai on February 11, 2015

They’re called “mat drills,” even though the Warriors perform them on the Ching field at 6 in the morning. They involve running, running fast, rolling, and moves in every direction. There also is a wrestling drill — mat work? — as well as a tug-of-war competition. After an hour or so, when yelling “Uncle” is not allowed, the Warriors head to the weight room. Fullback Justin Vele: * * * * * Quarterback Max Wittek: * * * * * […]

Early-bird shift

By Stephen Tsai on February 10, 2015

Pick a time slot, any time slot. Of the three time periods for the offseason conditioning program — 6 a.m., 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. — the most popular is the early shift. Part of the reason for the early workout is it fits better with class schedules; part is because it aligns with spring-practice times, and part is some like to work out on their own a second time in the afternoon. Workouts involve weight-lifting, core exercises and conditioning […]

Football auditions

By Stephen Tsai on February 9, 2015

It’s time for football hopefuls to start editing those highlight videos. Here are the important dates for future and former Warriors: > Walk-on tryouts: They’re tentatively scheduled for the Feb. 20. Participants much be full-time UH students if they want to be considered for the offseason conditioning program and spring training. Sign-ups are at the UH football office. > UH pro day: The combine-like event will be March 19 at San Diego State. Officials from every NFL team will be […]
