Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

FIU duo wins Saturday sand tourney

The tournament included teams from UH, Florida International, Hawai‘i Pacific, and Chaminade in a 16-team main draw and consolation bracket. The 16-team, single-elimination main draw was an all-FIU final with top-seeds Kate Stepanova and Ksenia Sukhareva defeating third-seeded Jess Mendoza/Maryna Samoday, 21-13, 19-21, 15-7. Both FIU teams defeated Hawai‘i teams in the semifinals en route to the finals. HPU beats Texas Tech in 5

Finally got a result from HPU from Wednesday’s match. unfortunately have yet to see a box. Hawaii Pacific beat Division I Texas Tech in five sets (25-17, 13-25, 25-18, 20-25, and 15-12).Freshman outside hitter Samantha Rummans led the Sea Warriors with 18 kills, followed by sophomore middle hitter Haley Doerfler who had 10 kills, and junior right-side hitter Makamae Recca added eight.
