Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

For the first time this season, they are traveling 15. Only one staying home this road trip is Passi, who is not medically cleared to play. Don’t know anything more than that.She wasn’t at practice. Interesting practice this morning. Manu-Olevao sent home with ‘flu-like’ symptoms. Passi not there. Shoji said Passi won’t be making the trip. no reason other than ‘personal issue.’ so what does that mean? Taylor took a lot of swings on the left, Huff had reps on the right. Wahine picked up some points, have 44, puts them at 28th in the poll three teams that were unranked last week moved into the poll: Duke to 21, Utah to 23 and Ohio 24. Amazingly USC still ranked at 14-12, drops to 21. Despite 2 losses, Washington only dropped to No. 5 from No. 2 Florida State with two losses dropped from 3 to 8. For those who missed yesterday’s picture of Annie Mitchem signing after her match, this is another one of her with Tom Pestolesi to the left, mom and dad. The Lasers have won 20 in a row, are 13-0 in conference. Friday night Mitchem had 14 kills, eight blocks, nine digs and two aces. She hit .600 in the match. Wahine back in Gym 1 (basketball has taken over the arena this week). They are scrimmaging for a couple of hours. Only Granoto’s paperwork is in but both Castillo and Mitchem told me that theirs is signed and waiting on transmission. Mitchem has a match tonight for undefeated IVC.
