Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

U.S. men advance in World League, women undefeated in WGP

Friday: Only have score but U.S. just defeated France 25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 25-20. Keeps hopes alive to defend the World League title Point differential has U.S and France advancing, host Brazil out. In Hong Kong Friday, the women stayed undefeated in World Grand Prix with a 25-21 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 win over Thailand. They play China Saturday. Libero Tamari Miyashiro, in her second start, had a match-high 12 digs.

Pool play opens Wednesday but U.S. doesn’t play until Thursday against Brazil, the team it beat to win World League last year US won its pool 9-3, Brazil won its pool 9-3 Both Shojis and Christenson on the team. A couple of things to update from Wednesday’s thread. the other player not in summer school is Guinasso. She is playing beach this summer but will be back for fall camp. Shoji said he didn’t mention her on the radio Wednesday because she wasn’t in Hawaii but she will be in the mix. Feel free to add if I missed stuff. Coach was on for about an hour, some of which there also was a reporter on Major League baseball, which played into Shoji’s love of the Dodgers. He discussed the players being in summer school that started Monday and open gym starting, which coaches are not allowed to attend. Bobby’s on vacation but Josh Pacheco filling in on 1420-AM Shoji supposed to be on at 7 a.m. to talk about various things. and for those who might have missed previous post, former UH players Jane Croson and Gus Tuaniga named to both the indoor and beach teams for American Samoa at the Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea. Post holiday catchup: US men move on in World League

Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend. Was one of the hottest I can remember. Finally got some rain this morning to cool things off. U.S. won its pool finishing 9-3, split the last two matches in Poland, losing 3-2 and winning 3-1. Poland moves on as well when finishing second at 8-4 Speraw decided to go with Kawika Shoji at setter, finished with 29 assists, 13 digs, 3 kills and a block. Erik Shoji at libero with 15 digs. […]
