Mills imparts words of wisdom

By Brian McInnis on August 6, 2018

When you’re taking a foreign tour to Australia, whom better to hear advice from than a native Australian? Ten-year NBA veteran Patty Mills has taken a liking to offseasons in Hawaii — a convenient stopping point between his country/continent and the U.S. Mainland — and his friendship and Saint Mary’s ties with UH coach Eran Ganot have meant the San Antonio Spurs guard has been a semi-regular presence around the Stan Sheriff Center during the last few summers. Mills got in a […]

By Stephen Tsai on August 6, 2018

The newcomer is feeling at home. Kolney Cassel, who enrolled at UH last month as a graduate transfer from Sacramento State, remains in the mix at quarterback. This training camp, each candidate has taken a turn in the front of the rotation. Today, it was Cassel’s turn to take the first reps of each drill. Cassel began his collegiate career at SMU, playing in June Jones’ run-and-shoot offense. But his stints there and at Sac State were interrupted by three […]

The Hawaii women’s basketball team is just about ready to make history. The Rainbow Wahine, who have never embarked on a foreign tour in program annals, leave for New Zealand and Australia on Tuesday for 10 days and four games as a prelude to their 2018-19 season, in what has been dubbed the “Hawaiian Airlines & Rainbow Wahine Basketball Go The Distance Tour.” UH will be hitting the cities of Auckland, Christchurch, Melbourne and Sydney, in that order. D day

By Stephen Tsai on August 4, 2018

The defense ruled in the Warriors’ final open-to-the-public practice of training camp. Cornerback Eugene Ford made two interceptions — a pick-6 and an end-zone grab at the end of the second overtime —in the scrimmage-like session. The Warriors also improved on point-scoring kicks with Kekoa Sasaoka and Ryan Meskell converting on all of their field-goal attempts. After the practice, the players and fans were treated to shave ice.

Padello carries on in brother’s absence

By Brian McInnis on August 3, 2018

Hawaii football camp is important, no doubt. Jobs must be won, knowledge must be attained, discipline instilled for the battles to come. But some things take priority over that. On the eastern flank of the Big Island, Fissure 8 is pumping out lava unabated in a seismic event that has claimed more than 700 homes. The effects of that have been far-reaching, including to UH Manoa Lower Campus, and Cooke Field, specifically. KK Padello, a UH senior defensive lineman, is […]

Elms is a former UH baseball player who has been on the strength/conditioning staff since 2013. He also handles men’s volleyball. His wife, Kelly (Majam) Elms was an All-America softball player for the […]

Colt is in the house

By Stephen Tsai on August 2, 2018

The man, the myth, the legend — Colt Brennan — attended today’s UH football practice. He also delivered an inspiring pre-practice speech to the Warriors. Brennan had been hospitalized for several months because of a blood clot in his spine. But he appears to be healthier. And the young Warriors, many of whom are at UH because they watched Brennan and company, were happy to meet the 2007 Heisman finalist.
