A good bye

By Stephen Tsai on January 2, 2013

After being hired as head coach, Norm Chow met with Mike Edwards in a closed-door meeting. Edwards had undergone shoulder surgery that would prevent him from contact drills until the summer. Still, Chow detailed the blueprint for the program and asked Edwards to be a construction leader. It was a risky proposal. Edwards had transferred to UH in July 2011 in search of a fresh start. He spent most of the 2011 season focusing on football, academics and absorbing Richard […]

It’s official: Edwards applying for NFL draft

By Stephen Tsai on January 1, 2013

Cornerback/returner Mike Edwards will forgo his senior season and apply for the NFL draft. Here’s the story: Edwards. The cupboard won’t be bare. Ne’Quan Phillips and Tony Grimes have started. Brian Clay, who redshirted in 2012, and John Hardy-Tuliau could play there. The coaches like Anthony Pierce, who grayshirted this past fall, and Ronald Fields, who is awaiting verification of eligibility. But, still, there was a reason Edwards was the Warriors’ MVP and a co-captain in 2012. He’s that good. […]

Farewell, 2012

By Stephen Tsai on December 31, 2012

Well, it wasn’t dull. If it felt like a long year, well, that’s because it was a leap year. But it also was because it consisted of the Wonder fiasco (and for his own sake, Stevie Wonder should just put on a concert so his last name won’t forever rhyme with “blunder”), Norm Chow’s first UH season, and the arrival of the Ben Jay era (he’s due here any week, right?). The year’s about to expire, and it’s time to […]

Feat of Clay

By Stephen Tsai on December 30, 2012

Charles Clay, who made a successful transition from receiver to safety, has been awarded a scholarship for the spring semester. Clay is a 2009 Hilo High graduate. He was at SMU for two years, redshirting in 2009 and appearing in 12 games in 2010. He then transferred to UH, where he was granted immediate eligibility because of his status as an initial un-recruited walk-on transferring between schools. Clay began his UH career as a receiver before moving to defense in […]

Rolo to Temple

By Stephen Tsai on December 29, 2012

Congrats to Nick Rolovich on becoming Temple’s offensive coordinator. He’ll make more money and have a chance to run the four-wide offense. While Rolo had the OC title at Nevada, his input was limited. He’ll get to run the offensive show with the Owls. * * * * * Dismantle the “snooze” button. The Warriors will be moving spring practices to the morning in 2013. It will be part of what head coach Norm Chow describes as “an experiment” in […]

Strength in numbers

By Stephen Tsai on December 28, 2012

When the new year begins, the Warriors are expected to address the shortage of strength and conditioning coaches for the athletic department and football program. Since Mel deLaura’s departure in 2010, the Warriors have been without a fulltime football-only S&C coach. Of the 10 Mountain West football teams in 2012, UH was the only one without a FT S&C coach. School — Number of teams — FT S&C coaches — FT S&C coaches for football Air Force — 27 — […]

Dunnachie gets all-star invite

By Stephen Tsai on December 27, 2012

Former UH punter Alex Dunnachie has been invited to play in the Casino Del Sol All-Star Game in Tucson on Jan. 11, 2013. Dunnachie leaves Hawaii today to train in California. He still has not selected an agent. * * * * * * This year, the volleyball Warriors will have “VASTEC” on the back of their practice jerseys. Translation: Volleyball, academics, strength, teamwork, effort/energy, choice. The Warriors opened training camp today. * * * * * * There is […]

Tommy Lee to retire

By Stephen Tsai on December 26, 2012

Tommy Lee is expected to announce his retirement today as the Warriors’ offensive coordinator and receivers coach. Lee is  a good coach and a good guy. He was coaxed out of retirement last year to be on Norm Chow’s first UH coaching staff. Lee’s retirement is part of a wish to spend more time with family on the mainland. He has a son living in Utah and a daughter in the Bay Area. Lee and his wife still own a […]
