One more chance

By Stephen Tsai on January 5, 2013

Former UH defensive back Richard Torres was set to become a Warrior graduate assistant this semester. It was a natural fit. Torres was a 140-pound walk-on from Kahuku High who improved his strength and skills to become a UH team captain. The GA position would have been a boost for what appears to be his destiny as a college coach. But Torres said he was just not ready to give up his pro aspirations. Torres said he will compete in […]

Making the grade

By Stephen Tsai on January 4, 2013

Forty-eight Warriors earned a GPA of at least 3.0 during the fall semester. Four Warriors had 4.0 GPAs for the semester — tight end Harold Moleni, receiver Justin Clapp, defensive lineman Calen Friel and defensive back Brian Clay. The best unit was the offensive line with a GPA of 3.22. The quarterbacks were second at 2.97 — an average that would be higher if it included  the grades of Sean Schroeder, a Duke graduate who took post-graduate classes at UH. […]

Ultimate fan

By Stephen Tsai on January 3, 2013

There are ultimate fans and then there was Rodney Okai. Okai was best known as the skinny Asian guy  hanging over the front-row rail and sharing his “opinion” of officiating at UH basketball games. He was a season-ticket holder in football and men’s basketball, although it was never apparent why he was charged full price. He never sat during games. He was a supervisor at Oceanic who carefully planned his vacations. He would take off during San Francisco 49er playoff […]
