Keeping a promise

By Stephen Tsai on January 29, 2009

It’s been open season on UH recruits. But don’t worry about quarterback David Graves. “I’m definitely still with Hawai‘i,” Graves said. He said quarterback Nick Rolovich made a home visit the past Monday. “For sure, I’m signing with Hawai‘i,” Graves said. “Everything is A-OK. I’m pretty excited.” * * * Fourteen players who competed in last week’s walk-on tryouts have earned berths on the spring roster. They’ll participate in next week’s start of Super Games, and will be assigned lockers. […]

Cold front

By Stephen Tsai on January 28, 2009

UH coaches Ron Lee, Cal Lee, George Lumpkin and Nick Rolovich are on the Mainland making home visits to prospects who have given verbal commitments to the Warriors. (Ron Lee’s flight was snow-postponed yesterday in Oklahoma City.) What’s more, assistant coach Brian Smith is heading to American Samoa. And Greg McMackin has visited prospects on O‘ahu. This is a hectic time heading into the final weekend before the Feb. 4 signing date. Washington, UCLA, Oregon and Oregon State are among […]

Don't know much about geography …

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2009

What a wonderful world this would be if I actually had the correct state for Butte College. I wrote that it was in Montana. It’s actually in California. Hey, maybe Washington and UCLA recruiting poachers will go off to the wrong place. Anyway, a UH coach told me: “I hope you’re not a UH grad.” This was like the first time I tried to go to BYU. I didn’t realize that Brigham Young was in the opposite direction of Brigham, […]

UH's best Bud

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2009

Remember the joke from elementary school: Q: Does beer make you smart? A: It made Budweiser. Well, maybe that’s sorta-sorta true. As part of the “Get Into the Game” program, Budweiser promised to donate something like a quarter for every case sold. Seems like a lot of UH fans have, um, team spirit. Tonight, Budweiser will present a $100,000 check to the UH football program. Nice call on the part of the UH marketing folks. * * * Here’s David […]

Taylor mending

By Stephen Tsai on January 23, 2009

After fully recovering from a scary viral infection, what’s a little knee problem? “It’s nothing major,” said wideout Jovonte Taylor, who underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a slightly torn meniscus. Taylor, who was on crutches yesterday, said he should be able to resume workouts in three weeks. Taylor withdrew from classes the past October when he suffered a viral infection. “I lost 25 pounds, to be exact,” said Taylor, whose weight dropped to 153. “I thought I was dying, man. […]
