By Stephen Tsai on February 7, 2010

The SMU football program starts its offseason conditioning program tomorrow — under former UH strength/conditioning coach Mel deLaura. June Jones told the Warrior Beat that deLaura will be in charge of SMU’s overall strength and conditioning program with an emphasis on football. The offer came after 1) Vic Viloria left SMU, 2) it was learned that deLaura had been reassigned from leading UH football’s conditioning program. Delaura will earn “close to six figures” annually, Jones said. “He’s been the best […]

Gray shirt fading in the wash

By Stephen Tsai on February 6, 2010

I’m told there is a rule going into effect that will limit the number of scholarships a school may extend each academic year. But wait. Isn’t there already a rule limiting schools to 25 initials each year and no more than 85 on a roster? The big deal is the rule would impact gray shirts — recruits who sign in February, but do not join a team until January of the following year. UH has favored this process because: 1) […]

He has his own Web site: http://tylerhadden.com/profile.html The Warriors had scheduled a recruiting trip for a kicker from Texas this weekend. But yesterday morning, UH learned Hadden had mad a verbal commitment with New Mexico State. The Warriors then made a scholarship offer to Hadden, who accepted. Earlier, Hadden was given a letter of […]

Volunteer pay cuts

By Stephen Tsai on February 4, 2010

All of  the UH coaches have been asked to take voluntary 5 percent pay cuts. There will be no penalty if they decline. Also, because the pay cut would be handled through personnel officers, athletic department administrators would not know who accepted or didn’t accept pay cuts for at least a year. That would remove the appearance of pressure. This is part of a system-wide effort to curb costs. * * * * * It appears that the football career […]

Allen Sampson, a receiver/kick returner from Plant High (Tampa, Fla.) told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors. “I know a lot of people go to Hawai‘i for the scenery and weather, but I fell in love with the program,” Sampson said. Sampson, who is 5 feet 8 and 155 pounds, said he can run 40 yards in 4.38 seconds. A scout timed him at 4.39 seconds. Last season, he caught 56 passes for 867 […]
