Davone Bess

By Stephen Tsai on February 16, 2010

Big thanks to Davone Bess for appearing as our guest on the Warrior Beat Show. And  congrats to Al for winning the Bess-autographed Dolphins hat. * * * * * The Sept. 2 UH-USC game will be shown on ESPN. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium. UH has commissioned a poll to find out the preferred starting time for home kickoffs. Last year, WAC games started at 5 p.m. to allow visiting teams to make the redeye flights […]

Family reunion

By Stephen Tsai on February 15, 2010

Linebacker Cory Daniel and offensive lineman Clint Daniel hopes to have company at UH. Their younger twin brothers — Cody and Christopher, each 6 feet 5 — are attending Windward Community College with the intent of transferring to Manoa this summer. Meanwhile, Cory Daniel, who missed the 2009 season because of pneumonia, said he is working to get into better shape. Cory took the scenic route to Manoa, competing as an MMA fighter and then attending junior college. He was […]

Red Rocha

By Stephen Tsai on February 14, 2010

Red Rocha will always be synonymous with how far UH can soar (head coach of the Fabulous  Five) and how far it can stoop (he was fired at the team banquet). The thing about Rocha was he was a battler who also was filled with the aloha spirit. The metaphor was the broken pinkie on his finger. He was tough in that he never bothered to get it corrected. But, symbolically, it was said that his hand was shaped into […]

Goodwill trip

By Stephen Tsai on February 13, 2010

Head coach Greg McMackin is part of a small group of Hawaii representatives who will travel to Japan on a goodwill tour next month. It will be the second Japan trip for McMackin who is using it to maintain good relationship as well as — maybe, hopefully — find a football prospect. This is part of UH’s attempt to break into the Asia market.

Allen-Jones seeks comeback

By Stephen Tsai on February 12, 2010

Cameron Allen-Jones is attempting a comeback. Allen-Jones missed the entire 2009 season after suffering severe burns in a kitchen accident. Allen-Jones still needs NCAA clearance for the missed time. If Allen-Jones is allowed back, he would provide a boost at defensive end. During his UH career, he also has practiced as an offensive lineman and perimeter blocker (re: tight end). There once was talk that he could be used as a big back. * * * * * With UH […]

Just a couple of Hawaii guys hanging out

By Stephen Tsai on February 11, 2010

It is one thing when a Punahou graduate introduces you to his wife as the best quarterback to ever come out of Hawaii. It’s quite another thing when the Punahou guy is the leader of the free world and his wife is First Lady Michele Obama. Here’s Colt Brennan at a recent visit at the White House. E-mail me at sstsai@hawaii.edu if you want me to forward a larger image. * * * * * Keep an eye on Kelly […]

Sealy to UCLA

By Stephen Tsai on February 10, 2010

Congrats to Mike Sealy for landing the third-best job in women’s volleyball (behind the Olympics and Rainbow Wahine coaching positions). He’ll do a great job at UCLA. His successor? C’mon, Scott Wong has to be the leading candidate, right? * * * * * We’re hearing that a former Heisman Trophy candidate’s unpaid parking bills at the school were sent to a collection agency. Because the player had graduated more than two years ago, and the bills were not forwarded, […]

Malcolm Lane suspended

By Stephen Tsai on February 9, 2010

Wideout Malcolm Lane’s comeback attempted has been derailed. Head coach Greg McMackin announced on the Warrior Beat Show that Lane, who did not play last season to focus on academics, has been suspended for violating team rules. That means Lane will not participate in the offseason conditioning program. He also is not expected to be available for spring practice. It was hoped Lane would compete to reclaim the starting right wideout’s job he held in 2008. Jovonte Taylor, who led […]
