Thinking green

By Stephen Tsai on July 28, 2010

Despite the implementation of an athletics fee — which won’t kick in until January — the UH athletic department continues to to be mindful of the budget.  Warrior football coach Greg McMackin’s decision to eliminate team movie outings on the eve of games is just the first step in cutting costs. What’s more, McMackin still is voluntarily taking a 7 percent pay cut through June 30, 2011 — which amounts to $77,004 annually and $141,174 for the 22-month period.  Also, […]

WAC football preview: Day 2

By Stephen Tsai on July 27, 2010

• It’s interesting that New Mexico State picked up two players — quarterback Andrew Manley and running back Kenny Turner — who were recruited by UH but not offered 2010 scholarships. NMSU coach DeWayne Walker said Manley will have a chance to compete for a starting berth in training camp, which opens next week. • Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Dykes on his confidence early in his coaching career: “I’m from Texas. We think we invented football.” • Dykes said it […]

WAC Football Preview: Day 1

By Stephen Tsai on July 26, 2010

SALT LAKE CITY — Warrior head coach Greg McMackin delivered a respectful presentation during this morning’s session at the WAC Football Media Preview.  Referring to notes neatly written in a binder,  McMackin made a brief opening statement in which he praised the expected improvement of all of the WAC teams and briefly touched on the UH depth chart — the top two quarterbacks won’t be named until after the first week of training camp — then took questions from reporters.  […]

Hit the road, Jack

By Stephen Tsai on July 25, 2010

Ah, the best plans …  If things went according to the blueprint, the Honolulu-L.A.-Utah schedule would have had me in Salt Lake City this morning. Instead, because of an hour delay out of Honolulu because of a light problem that turned out not to be a problem at all, I missed the connector out of L.A. and was sent on a detour to San Francisco, where I was told: “We think we found your luggage.” To which I asked: My […]

Overtime

By Stephen Tsai on July 24, 2010

The Warriors’ offseason conditioning program has ended, but that hasn’t prevented many of the players from still working out.  Yesterday afternoon, several offensive linemen worked on their footwork and blocking for about an hour. What should be encouraging is that seniors Laupepa Letuli and Brysen “Bulla” Ginlack were leading the way.  UH’s training camp opens Aug. 4.  * * * * *  Happy anniversary to Wena.

A sand blast

By Stephen Tsai on July 23, 2010

The  football Warriors completed their offseason conditioning program with a workout at Queen’s surf. Cones and rope ladders were set up for different drills. Members of the soccer, women’s volleyball and golf teams also participated in the workout. Former UH offensive linemen Ray Hisatake of the Carolina Panthers and Aaron Kia of the J-E-T-S (Jets! Jets! Jets!) took part in the drills. Both leave next week for the start of NFL training camps. After this, the Warriors will take a […]

Newcomer DBs gain notice

By Stephen Tsai on July 22, 2010

Teammates have been impressed with freshman defensive backs Bubba Poueu-Luna, Dee Maggitt and John Hardy-Tuilau during offseason workouts. In Wednesday’s final 11-on-11 drills of the offseason, Poueu-Luna made two interceptions and two pass breakups. Maggitt also had an interception. Hardy-Tuilau has been impressive in press coverage. There is a possibility that all three might  play this season, much the way Mike Wadsworth and Aulola Tonga earned playing time on special teams as freshmen last year. Wadsworth is now on a […]

Parting shot

The Warriors today held their final 11-on-11 workout of the summer. They have weight-training and running sessions tomorrow, and a beach workout Friday. After that, there’s a break of nearly two weeks before the opening of training camp Aug. 4. At the request of defensive tackle Vaughn Meatoga, former UH d-tackle Mike Lafaele served as guest instructor: * * * * * Slotback Greg Salas made sure to stay inbounds after making a catch: * * * * * Wideout […]
