Tormey leaving Warriors

By Stephen Tsai on January 21, 2011

Chris Tormey, who coached UH’s special teams and safeties the past two football seasons, is set to join the coaching staff at Washington State.  The move makes sense for Tormey, who was raised in the Northwest and played and coached at the University of Idaho, which is located 8 miles from WSU’s Pullman campus.  Tormey was a point recruiter in the Northwest. Although he leaves for the Mainland Sunday, he still will assist the Warriors  in recruiting prospects from Washington.  […]

Walker walks

By Stephen Tsai on January 20, 2011

Lewis Walker apparently is transferring to Utah.  Last semester, Walker requested a release of his scholarship to transfer to either Utah or Weber State. The release was granted, and Walker said he is back in Salt Lake City.  It’s too bad. He’s a nice guy who would have been in competition for playing time at corner or quarter (nickelback). His knee injury has healed, too. When he was a freshman, Walker and a few teammates helped out at the Foster […]

Measurables

At the East-West Shrine workouts, these were former UH offensive lineman Laupepa Letuli’s vitals: Height: 6-4 Weight: 326 Reach: 34 inches Wing span: 81.5 inches Letuli played right tackle as a UH senior, and was told he would play that position in the East-West despite projecting as a guard in the pros. But yesterday he was assigned right guard on the West’s first team. Wade Phillips is the West head coach. Agent Leo Goeas said Letuli has met with scouts […]

Warriors land defensive back

Ijumaa Armstrong of Culver City (Calif.) High told the Warrior Beat he has accepted a UH football scholarship.  “I love the coaches and the program,” Armstrong said. “I really like coach (Brian) Smith, coach (Rich) Miano and coach Mack.” Armstrong said he is 5 feet 11, 180 pounds, and is capable of running 40 yards in 4.48 seconds and bench pressing 275 pounds. He played receiver and cornerback at Culver City, but is projected to compete at cornerback, safety or […]

Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on January 16, 2011

• Former Warrior receiver/returner Chad Owens said he is in no rush to reach a decision with the New York Jets. While it appears the opportunity is enticing — a playoff team in which a key receiver (Braylon Edwards) and returner (Brad Smith) will be free agents after this season — there are no guarantees. First, Edwards and Smith are likely to re-sign. Second, there is a possibility of a lockout. Owens is a star in the CFL, and while […]

Don’t touch the panic button

By Stephen Tsai on January 15, 2011

For its fans, the most hopeful thing is the UH volleyball team’s 0-2 start really doesn’t have much meaning.  In most every other NCAA sport, accumulating non-conference victories is essential to post-season chances. Not so for members of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, which has secured the at-large berth in all but one of the past 20 NCAA championship tournaments.  In men’s volleyball, early non-conference matches can be used to develop chemistry.  Now, if UH struggles in MPSF matches against […]

All of the Warrior football coaches are back in town for this weekend’s recruiting trips.  Three prospects arrive today, another Sunday. * * * * *  MIke D’Andrea, a motivational coach, is working with the Warrior volleyball team. D’Andrea used to work with the UH basketball team, and once co-authored a book with former UH coach Riley Wallace.  * * * * *  Happy birthday to Calvin from Kona.
