Sunday ramblings

By Stephen Tsai on April 15, 2012

Just thinking . . . • If UH won’t schedule a 13th game, how about a battle of the bands? • If I read one more story about the UH athletic department’s financial woes, I might stick a fork in my eye. Or better yet, how about taking a stab at this: Forgive the deficit. The accumulated deficit of about $10 million is covered from a fund built on contributions from various campus departments. Consider it to be like a […]

The first test

By Stephen Tsai on April 14, 2012

The event: The Warriors’ first scrimmage of spring practice. Breakdown: 60 plays — 34 runs (including six sacks) and 26 passes (including two negated because of penalties). The good: Inside receiver Scott Harding is making a case for the Warriors to use more three-receiver sets. A day after dropping a wide-open TD pass in a limited-contact scrimmage, Harding came back in the full-contact scrimmage to grab four of the five passes thrown in his direction, including one that resulted in […]

Passing interest

By Stephen Tsai on April 12, 2012

Pick a place, any place. Downey High quarterback Aaron Zwahlen chose Hawaii as the family’s destination for his spring break. If things align, Zwahlen could find Hawaii to be home for five years. UH is among the schools Zwahlen is considering. Duke, Northwestern and Texas Tech have expressed interest in the 6-foot-3, 195-pound quarterback who will be a senior this coming fall. The Warriors have received an endorsement from Zwahlen’s father, Dr. Lynn Zwahlen, a Modesto dentist. UH head coach Norm […]

The how and Y of Vele’s improvement

By Stephen Tsai on April 11, 2012

Freshman linebacker Justin Vele decided he needed to go the extra miles. Vele and his siblings enrolled in the family plan at the YMCA in Kalihi. His main workout is on the treadmill. “I’ll probably run for an hour,” Vele said. “You start off slow for half an hour, then you pick up speed.” Vele is now quicker, 10 pounds lighter and in the mix at weakside linebacker. “I’ve seen the impact,” said Vele, a Farrington graduate who redshirted in […]

Tee for 252

By Stephen Tsai on April 10, 2012

There will be 252 competing in today’s 18th Na Koa Golf Tournament at Hawaii Prince. All of the Warriors coaches will be in attendance. The entry fee was $1,000 per three-player. With 84 teams, that equates to a lot of green for the Warriors. * * * * * • Joey Iosefa has been banged up, but after seven practices, he is clearly the Warriors’ best running back. John Lister also has been doing well. Will Gregory had several nice […]

Safety’s first

By Stephen Tsai on April 9, 2012

Bubba Poueu-Luna is willing to give the shirt off his back. The Warriors were recruiting a linebacker, and Poueu-Luna was asked if he would relinquish his jersey number 36. “I’m a team man,” Poueu-Luna said. “I gave it up. I moved on to a better number.” Poueu-Luna said his new number — 9 — is a better aesthetic fit. “I think I look better in 9,” he said, smiling. Poueu-Luna is hoping for a change in fortunes this season. His […]

UH lands d-end

By Stephen Tsai on April 8, 2012

Charles Tuaau, a former Leilehua High defensive end, said he will turn down Pac-12 offers to join the Warriors in January. Tuaau was named to the 2009 All-State second team. He signed with UH in 2010, but did not meet the requirements to play for the Warriors that year. Instead, he played at Pasadena City College, where he had 17 backfield tackles, including five sacks, in 2010. He redshirted last year after transferring to Riverside College. Tuaau said he will […]
