Delay play

By Stephen Tsai on September 30, 2013

Head coach Norm Chow told the Warrior Beat this morning that he will wait until later this week before deciding on a starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against San Jose State. There are two factors: 1) The availability of Taylor Graham, who started the first three games, and 2) Whether Sean Schroeder, who nearly pulled off the greatest comeback in NCAA history, is better suited as a starter or reliever. Chow said Ikaika Woolsey is deserving of more playing time. […]

Day-after musings

By Stephen Tsai on September 29, 2013

• For UH fans, the best thing about last night’s comeback was nobody in the UH locker room was happy. Not head coach Norm Chow, whose team finally saw the light on offense and defense. Not Sean Schroeder, who nearly engineered an historic comeback. Not any of the receivers, linemen nor defensive players. The Rainbow Warriors thought they could have won the game, and they were ticked that they didn’t. Given the option, UH rejected the moral victory. • Schroeder […]

Game day: Fresno State

By Stephen Tsai on September 28, 2013

Ikaika Woolsey will start at quarterback in place of injured Taylor Graham tonight against Fresno State. Woolsey practiced on the first team all week. This will be his first start in three years. He grayshirted in 2011 and redshirted last year.

Open house

There was a period last year when linebacker TJ Taimatuia’s family experienced a cash shortage because of a medical situation. Without hesitation, Taimatuia gave his family the money designated for his dormitory room. Teammates and friends allowed Taimatuia to sleep on their couches. Now his family is doing well. So, too, is Taimatuia. He and three teammates are renting an apartment 5 minutes from campus. He also worked this summer to earn rainy-day money. In a pay-it-forward move, Taimatuia and […]

Gabriel is honorary captain

By Stephen Tsai on September 26, 2013

Garrett Gabriel, who led the Rainbow Warriors to two victories over BYU — including the night BYU’s Ty Detmer won the Heisman Trophy — is the honorary captain this week. Gabriel spoke to the team at the end of today’s practice. Gabriel and his wife have three sons. He now works for the Department of Education. * * * * * Defensive end Beau Yap is expected to be medically cleared to play in Saturday’s game against 25th-ranked Fresno State. […]

Iosefa to undergo surgery

By Stephen Tsai on September 25, 2013

Running back Joey Iosefa will undergo a foot procedure that will sideline him for about four weeks. Iosefa suffered  a fracture in his left foot while working out in July. He opted for non-surgical rehabilitation. Iosefa missed UH’s first two games. Last week, he said he “tweaked” his left foot on UH’s opening drive against Nevada. This time, he opted to undergo a procedure in which a pin will be inserted into his left foot. He should be ready to […]

Schroeder, Woolsey takes reps

By Stephen Tsai on September 24, 2013

If the game were played today, it would be Sean Schroeder or Ikaika Woolsey at quarterback. If it were tomorrow, well … For now, Taylor Graham is on a “day-by-day” status because of a sore left (non-throwing) shoulder, according to UH head coach Norm Chow, and has not been ruled out of starting against Fresno State on Saturday. Today, Schroeder and Woolsey took most of the reps, and Jeremy Higgins split time between UH’s offense and the scout team. After […]

UH turns down Colorado offer

By Stephen Tsai on September 23, 2013

UH has turned down an offer to play Colorado on Oct. 19 in Boulder. Colorado officials were seeking a home game to replace the Sept. 14 game against Fresno State that was canceled because of area floods. * * * * * Like I said before, if it were up to me, I would have played the game. If injuries and travel are a concern, then cancel the Navy game. Heck, cancel the Fresno State game. There’s a possibility of […]
