Tick … tick … tick …

By Stephen Tsai on May 5, 2014

Like most Oahu roads, the University of Hawaii athletic complex is under construction. The latest project is the renovation of the coaches’ locker rooms and, more importantly, the equipment room. The drop-dead completion deadline is late July. Football’s training camp begins Aug. 1. You can do the math. UH construction is on the clock. Tick … tick … tick …

Dearly departed

By Stephen Tsai on May 4, 2014

Kudos to “Ferd” on his column about the disappearing traditions at UH. To add to his list, we’re missing: > The Rainbow Easter Baseball Tournament. Sure, only a handful were going to the noon games and scheduling conflicts made it difficult for it to work out, but it was fun while it lasted, and it lasted a long time. > The Rainbow Classic. There’s still a Rainbow Classic, but that’s like saying the group touring as the Temptations and singing […]

The art of the deal

By Stephen Tsai on May 3, 2014

Eperone Moananu’s commitment the other day was significant, and not just because the Warriors added a solid offensive tackle to their 2015 class. Here’s the dealio: > Rebuilding bridges: While the Warriors have focused on 30 Hawaii prospects for the 2015 class, they also wanted to re-establish ties in American Samoa and Australia. Moananu was the first step. > To the top: If a team is going to make a splash, it’s best to start in the deepest pond. Moananu’s […]

UH lands O-tackle

By Stephen Tsai on May 1, 2014

One of the top offensive linemen in American Samoa has decided to join the Rainbow Warriors’ 2015 recruiting class. Eperone Moananu of Tafuna High told the Star-Advertiser he has agreed to accept a football scholarship, will sign in February, and join the Rainbow Warriors for the 2015 season. Moananu is 6-2 and 290 pounds. He plays tackle for Tafuna, which has won consecutive high school championships under Okland Salave‘a. UH line coach Chris Naeole, who is the point recruiter, was […]

Chasing the dream

By Stephen Tsai on April 30, 2014

Maybe something big will happen, maybe nothing at all. But Craig Cofer — a player without a permanent position — recently participated in an invitation-only workout with the San Francisco 49ers. He also is in line for a private workout with the Arizona Cardinals. At UH, Cofer worked hard and maintained an upbeat attitude despite shuffling between defensive end and tight end. There were a few practices where he wore a defensive jersey over an offensive jersey. In a couple […]

Special attention

By Stephen Tsai on April 29, 2014

It is a credit to special teams and the defensive secondary that Damien Packer and Josh Donovan will go on scholarship beginning this summer. Packer and Donovan — similar to Mike Martin, who earlier had been promised a scholarship — earned their way first as special-team players and then as safeties. Further back, each attracted attention with their scout-team work. One of UH’s inspirational placards is: Work like nobody’s watching.  Well, they are watching. Every play of every practice is […]

Spring football officially ends with this morning’s team meeting at the UH athletic complex. The coaches will review the 15 practices of spring training, then detail the general goals leading to training camp in August. UH is expected to release a post-spring depth chart before the spring semester ends on May 16.
