There is no doubting the resiliency of the UH softball supporters. Told that booster-club funds could not be used to pay for a gently used video camera, the leaders did not pout — OK, they pouted a skosh — but then they asked for donations. According to people in the know, June Jones is indeed a candidate for the UNLV coaching job and a phone interview is scheduled. Bishop Gorman High coach Tony Sanchez remains as the front-runner. Jones did not attend UNLV, but he is an alumnus of four other universities. Those connections have led to another candidacy: Portland State has contacted Jones about its head coach’s job. Sure, there’s panic when a school like UAB drops football. There’s panic when a tornado rips through Oklahoma. But, relax, it’s not happening in Hawaii. Different circumstances, different everything. First, UAB, as it revealed in its announcement, was subsidizing the athletic department with $20 million annually. Scott Harding was named to the Mountain West Conference’s first team as a punter. No other Warrior was selected to the first or second team. Honorable mention went to center Kody Afusia, left tackle Ben Clarke, kicker Tyler Hadden, right tackle Sean Shigematsu, safety Taz Stevenson and defensive end Beau Yap.
