Kurt Gouveia has spent a football life being overlooked. UH did not recruit Gouveia, the state’s player of the year. He went to BYU, became an All-WAC linebacker and was a key member of the Cougars’ national championship team. NFL teams were wary, too. While growing up, Campbell High lineman Arona Amosa heard the stories about his father, Amosa Amosa, a former UH lineman. “I was hoping to make some stories of my own,” said Arona Amosa, who will join the Warriors as a preferred walk-on. Recruits signed their letters of intent with Hawaii on Wednesday.
I have no idea what a nitty or a gritty is, but the Warriors apparently are down to the nitty-gritty in this recruiting season. Austin Webb, a 6-foot-8, 312-pound offensive tackle from Dallas, said he has accepted a scholarship from the Warriors, will sign a letter of intent tomorrow, and will move to Hawaii in July. If you missed the turnover at midnight, it’s now the dead period again for recruiting. That means a team can initiate only one telephone call per week to each prospect.
