Cindy Luis covers University of Hawaii volleyball for the Star-Advertiser. She began her career as a sports journalist in Hawaii in 1981 with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin and was the sports editor, assistant sports editor, columnist and beat writer during a 31-year span before the paper became the Star-Advertiser. She graduated from UCLA in 1977 with a B.A. in Communication Studies.

IVC summer school ended today. Nothing has changed about Mitchem. Still is on track to be here by fall camp Aug. 10. She has provisional admittance to UH, meaning that she still has to attain her AA degree and submit the paperwork. About an 11 hour day at Queen’s for the players. Both finals finished after sunset with it really dark for the women’s that went three James Ka-Spencer McLachlin defeated Bryan Starks-James Bartholow, 21-12, 21-13. Starks-Bartholow had little time to rest after eliminating Johann Timmer-Dennis Roberts, 14-21, 21-17, 15-11 Natasha Bell-Nikki Taylor def. Congrats to Spieler on beach win

A little late with this one, had mentioned earlier this month she got her AAA rating when playing with H. Huddleston a few weeks ago. July 12 Spieler and cousin Torry Van Winden repeated as Santa Barbara Open champions. Nice story in the local paper. Van Winden has committed to play for UCLA. From USAV At the end of a long two months of volleyball, the U.S. Men’s National Team swept Poland, 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 to win the FIVB World League bronze medal on Sunday at the Maracanazinho stadium in Rio de Janeiro. U.S. men fall to Serbia 3-2, E. Shoji injured

The U.S. men’s national volleyball team rallied from down 0-2 couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to Serbia 25-23, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25, 15-12 in the FIVB World League semifinal match Saturday in Rio de Janeiro.
