For the first time since 2016, the Hawaii women’s volleyball team is the champion of the Big West Conference. Three outgoing players — libero Rika Okino, setter Bailey Choy and hitter McKenna Ross — spoke to Hawaii Warrior World after the sweep and senior night ceremonies. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. In a late-season twist, redshirt freshman Chevan Cordeiro was called upon to start for Hawaii against San Jose State on Saturday night. The Saint Louis School product came through, throwing for 309 yards and three touchdowns and running for two more in the Rainbow Warriors’ 42-40 victory to improve to 6-4 on the season and 3-3 in the Mountain West. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. Behind a career-high 15 points and nine rebounds from junior Samuta Avea and an effective debut for freshman Bernardo da Silva, the Hawaii men’s basketball team was victorious in its 2019-20 season opener over Florida A&M, 65-52 on Friday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. Da Silva, a 6-foot-9 Brazilian who played prep ball at the Wasatch Academy in Utah, scored 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had an emphatic pair of blocked shots for UH. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII […]
The No. 21 Hawaii women’s volleyball team started fast, withstood a lull, then powered past two-time defending Big West champion Cal Poly to assume first place in the conference standings on Sunday night at the Stan Sheriff Center. UH (20-3, 10-2 Big West) won 25-15, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23 to move a half-game ahead of CP (16-7, 9-2), which swept UH at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif., last month. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. Fair warning: This one might be tough to re-live, Hawaii football fans. Nevertheless, Warrior World’s mission is to document both the successes and shortcomings of University of Hawaii sports, and Saturday night’s 41-38 loss to Fresno State at Aloha Stadium was, unfortunately for the Rainbow Warriors, one of the latter. It was a highly dramatic fourth quarter, with the Bulldogs in the process of pulling away for a road victory before Chevan Cordeiro appeared poised to rouse the Warriors to […]
The fourth quarter started off so well for Hawaii on Saturday night. The Rainbow Warriors, for a moment, appeared poised to launch into full comeback mode against Air Force, opening the final period with a touchdown connection between Cole McDonald and JoJo Ward. >> PHOTO GALLERY: HAWAII VS. AIR FORCE But it was not to be. Air Force would score three more touchdowns and roll to 56-26 road win — dealing UH its first defeat at home in a 4-3 (1-2 […]
The ghosts of road struggles past had no hold on Hawaii football when it took to Chris Ault Field at Mackay Stadium field on Sept. 28. UH entered that game 1-8 all-time against Nevada in Reno. That, and constant drizzle in chilly weather mattered not as the Rainbow Warriors put together their most complete game of the season — and arguably in years — in steamrolling the Wolf Pack 54-3. Now the Rainbow Warriors (4-1, 1-0 Mountain West) prepare to embark for […]
It was by no means pretty, and it didn’t come down to a last play or two like the first two home games of the season, but Hawaii did what it had to in the fourth quarter to hold off FCS opponent Central Arkansas on Saturday night. The 35-16 victory made it 17 straight wins over FCS opponents dating back to 2001. >> HAWAII VS. CENTRAL ARKANSAS PHOTO GALLERY The Bears made things interesting after UH scored the first 28 […]
