Hawaii women’s volleyball: Congrats to Rika Okino, UH’s student engineer of the year

My apologies for the lateness on this. Rika Okino, the Wahine starting libero last season, has earned the Hawaii Council of Engineering Societies (HCES) Student Engineer of the Year Award for 2020. She is graduating this May with a degree in civil engineering. The Kalani High valedictorian has been a UH Scholar-Athlete the past four years and was an All-Big West academic selection in 2019.

Hawaii has signed 6-2 setter Mylana Byrd, who is transferring from Alabama. She is enrolling at UH this spring and will have two seasons to play beginning in fall. From UH: In her two seasons at Alabama, Byrd played in 158 total sets with 844 assists, 81 digs, 80 total blocks (15-solo/65-block assist), and 71 kills. Happy New Year Teee Williams-Slacanin, the AVCA Player of the Year in 1987 and (co) 89, as well as Dave Shoji’s former assistant Charlie Brande are among the 15 who will be inducted into the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame in May. Complete story click here Congrats to Hanna Hellvig, and Amber Igiede named to VolleyballMag.com’s Freshman All-America Team. Hellvig is one of 14 All-America first team, and Igiede one of 45 honorable mentions. Cal State Fullerton’s outside hitter Julia Crawford and UC Santa Barbara opposite Tallulah Froley were the only other players from the Big West to be recognized, both earning honorable mention honors. Also named to the All-America team was Pitt setter Lexis Akeo (Kamehameha).

The Hawaii women’s volleyball team was ranked No. 15 in the final American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I Top 25 poll on Monday. The Rainbow Wahine (26-4) were at No. 18 heading into the NCAA tournament where they were the 12th seed.
