Strom-Okimoto boots Bowling Green

By Brian McInnis on August 19, 2018

Just like practice. Raisa Strom-Okimoto found herself in a rare situation for a player so usually marked as a top priority — she was alone in open space — in the 96th minute, about 25 yards out. After a deflected touch by Daelenn Tokunaga, the ball found its way to her feet, and she launched it to the far post where it curled in just past the Bowling Green goalkeeper for the 1-0 win on Sunday night at Waipio Peninsula […]

More run-and-shoot: Mouse’s offense clicked

By Dave Reardon on August 19, 2018

Warning: This “Quick Reads” entry is not a quick read, it’s pretty long. Our three-day inspection of the run-and-shoot starts in today’s Star-Advertiser, and in researching it, I found an incredible amount of interesting stuff that we couldn’t fit into the print stories. Here’s more background about Mouse Davis’ role in changing football — in Hawaii and everywhere else — from Mouse himself, and one of his high school players in Oregon 50 years ago who without the run-and-shoot would […]

Warrior Beat: Lessons from 2018 camp

By Stephen Tsai on August 19, 2018

After 20 practices spread over 23 days, the Warriors completed training camp yesterday and are prepared for game week. But before packing away the sun screen — OK, the sun screen can still stay — and figuring out different ways to get KK Padello on the interview list, here’s what we learned from camp: > Age does not matter: Freshmen created some of the loudest buzz. Quarterbacks Jeremy Moussa and Chevan Cordeiro proved they could make the jump from high […]

Wahine wrap up two-a-days

By Cindy Luis on August 18, 2018

Team finished its second practice around 2:15 today. Still lots of work to do according to coaches and players. As mentioned after Friday’s scrimmage, they’re still working on starting lineup. Do think the one-and-dones will contribute this year. Opposite Angel Gaskin is a great addition but she’s never been in the passing rotation so that might limit her back row play. Middle Sarah Liva is athletic, still getting into volleyball mindset and shape. Libero Tita Akiu is really good. The […]

Warrior Beat: Warriors break camp

By Stephen Tsai on August 18, 2018

After 20 practices, the Warriors broke training camp this morning. The Warriors will enter their regular practice schedule on Monday, the first day of UH’s fall semester. The roster is permitted to expand at that time. The Warriors depart Wednesday evening to Denver in advance of next Saturday’s season opener against Colorado State. For the second day in a row, the Warriors practiced in their game-day black helmets. The decals will be added next week. As reported in your favorite […]

Texas A&M serves up a lesson

By Brian McInnis on August 18, 2018

Michele Nagamine was pretty sure that at one point Friday night, all eight of her freshmen who saw action did so at the same time. Eight freshmen playing eight of 10 field positions. In other words, let the learning commence. UH absorbed a lesson or two from No. 11 Texas A&M, which pounced on an early UH mistake between the UH defense and goalkeeper Lex Mata, and followed it up with some sublime goals to dominate the result, 4-0. But […]

Wahine fall in final tour game

By Brian McInnis on August 17, 2018

Go The Distance tour perfection was on the line on Saturday for the Hawaii women’s basketball team. It came up a bit short. The ATC Academy bested the Rainbow Wahine 55-41 in Sydney, as sophomore guard Jadynn Alexander was the only Wahine player in double figures, with 10 points. Yet UH headed home with a winning record, 3-1, having bested NZ Premiere North, NZ Premiere South, and Diamond Valley of SEABL over the last 10 days. In the loss, Lahni […]

Friday scrimmage updates and video

By Cindy Luis on August 17, 2018

Thank you Brian McInnis for video. Statehood Day celebratory crowd of about 1,000 are here. They are not keeping statics and are using a scoring system that only the coaches understand where points are awarded for true scoring and taken away for errors. On the White side currently is who I think are projected starters: Norene Iosia, Casey Castillo, Sarah Liva, Skyler Williams, Tita Akiu, McKenna Granato, Angel Gaskin. although Faith Ma’afala switched sides to serve leaving assistants Kaleo Baxter […]
