Warrior Beat: Final tune-up

By Stephen Tsai on September 7, 2018

The Warriors will finish prep work on the Rice game plan with this afternoon’s practice. The workout promises to be more detailed than yesterday’s walk-through session. * * * * * Rice arrived yesterday afternoon on a one-stopover charter flight. Conference USA allows members to have a travel party of 75 players. The Owls are observing that league limit for this non-conference road game.

Can Wahine make it 4 straight?

By Brian McInnis on September 6, 2018

Losses can teach you a lot. Since losing its season opener to nationally ranked Texas A&M in lopsided fashion, a young Hawaii soccer team has figured out how to pick up tips and tricks during wins, too. UH (3-1), which has started six freshmen at times this season, goes for its fourth straight win at 7 p.m. Friday vs. future Big West opponent UC San Diego at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Never mind the fact that the Tritons (2-0-1) are […]

Warrior Beat: 48-hour rule

By Stephen Tsai on September 6, 2018

This football season, the Warriors are employing their version of Casual Thursday. In previous years, the Warriors would have a regular practice on Thursday morning and a walk-through session on Friday afternoon. This year, the Warriors are in Under Armour dry-fit shirts during extended walk-throughs on Thursdays. A more intensive practice is held on Fridays. “It’s good for home games,” UH coach Nick Rolovich said of the new practice schedule. In the past “you practiced on Thursday morning — that’s […]

Managing the sudden attention, expectations

By Brian McInnis on September 6, 2018

A 2-0 record, when many thought the Hawaii football team would be 0-2, has drawn attention and expectations in equal measure. As mentioned earlier this week, the Rainbow Warriors received some votes in the top 25 polls. Heading into Saturday’s home game against Rice (1-1), UH players are suddenly having to manage the shift in team perception from the exterior — but, according to two with prominent roles, not much has changed on the interior. UH is favored by 17.5 points, […]

Warrior Beat: Strong start for Farris

By Stephen Tsai on September 5, 2018

Breaking up, the lyrics say, is hard to do. Not for cornerback Roe Farris, who is quietly having a superb year. This season, Farris, a fourth-year junior, has allowed only two completions — none for touchdowns. He also has held in check some gifted receivers. What’s more, Farris has taken on an expanded role. In the past week’s game against Navy, he slid into the tackle box as a corner-rover. Entering the season, the cornerback position was one of the […]

Rainbow Warriors receive top 25 votes

By Brian McInnis on September 4, 2018

The Hawaii football team is getting some attention. With two impressive victories over Colorado State and Navy, and perhaps aided by a couple of national TV appearances, UH (2-0) garnered some votes in the Associated Press and Coaches Top 25 Polls on Tuesday. They were the first mid-season polls released for the 2018 season. UH has three points in the AP and four in the Coaches. If there were expanded rankings, that’d put UH tied for 39th in the AP […]
