Warrior Beat: UH is nation’s only 3-0 team

By Stephen Tsai on September 9, 2018

Remember when oddsmakers set the over/under at 3.5 wins for the Warriors this season? Or when folks questioned whether Cole McDonald could adapt to the run-and-shoot offense? Consider: > After three games, the Warriors are the nation’s only 3-0 team. > Their 3-0 start matches the three-game record of the 2007 team, which, of course, went 12-0 that regular season. By the way, the 2007 team will be honored during the Sept. 22 game against Duquesne. That team was inducted […]

Booing a team that’s never trailed in 3 games? Really?

By Dave Reardon on September 8, 2018

Can’t say I’m surprised, since this is the stadium where fans booed during a game when the home team beat Alabama. This time it was due to displeasure with playcalling in Hawaii’s 43-29 victory over Rice tonight at Aloha Stadium. Yes, you read that correctly … a 43-29 VICTORY. Yes — UH, which hasn’t had a winning season since 2010 — was booed by its home fans in a game in which it never trailed, during a season in which […]

Game day: UH-Rice tracker

By Stephen Tsai on September 8, 2018

Cole McDonald threw four touchdown passes to boost the Warriors to a 43-29 victory over Rice tonight at Aloha Stadium. The Warriors improved to 3-0, matching their best start since 2007. * * * * * Instead of running out the clock, UH’s Fred Holly ran away, going 46 yards on a dive up the middle to extend the Warriors’ lead to 43-29 with 1:35 to play. The Warriors opened the drive when Dakota Torres secured Rice’s onside kick. * […]

Football Throwbacks: Rice

By Brian McInnis on September 8, 2018

All but one game of Hawaii’s football history against Rice took place during a six-year stretch as Western Athletic Conference opponents between 1999 and 2004. It’s been a sticky series for UH. Houston-based Rice leads the series 5-2 (it took four of six of the WAC meetings), including 2-1 at Hawaii. Today we’re focusing on the 2001 meeting at Aloha Stadium, the most closely contested of the bunch. The Owls won, 27-24, in an emotionally charged game that took place […]

UC San Diego proves its Big West worth

By Brian McInnis on September 7, 2018

UC San Diego might as well have shouted “Put me in, Coach!” on Friday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. The Division II Tritons fully looked the part of a Division I member of the Big West Conference — their destiny in two years — in a 2-1 win over Hawaii, in which the visitors came out like gangbusters and turned back several choice UH shots in the second half. Coming into Friday, the only time UH lost to a non-Division I […]
