Warrior Beat: Sweater weather

By Stephen Tsai on September 20, 2018

Oh, it was hot this morning — hotter than heck. The mercury was in the 80s. One of the trainers measured the humidity at 87 percent. It felt worse because the Warriors were practicing on Ching’s artificial surface. It was like an old Richard Simmons‘ DVD — sweating to the 80s. And yet … “It’s beautiful,” UH coach Nick Rolovich declared. “It’s not hot. It’s beautiful. Do you want to be out in the snow? Neither do they. But you […]

Warrior Beat: Trading places

By Stephen Tsai on September 19, 2018

Dakota Torres‘ move from slotback to linebacker is not unique. As a tight end/H-back through the 2017 season, Torres was a physical player who enjoyed contact. Even at slotback, where he relocated at the start of spring training, he brought an extra oomph to each play. So the move to linebacker — where he played as a Punahou freshman and sophomore — appears to be a natural transition. Through the many, many years, UH players have found success at new […]

VIDEO: Rainbow Warriors prepare for Duquesne

By Brian McInnis on September 18, 2018

The Hawaii football team is hungry coming off its 28-21 loss at Army. UH is in preparations for a homecoming meeting with FCS opponent Duquesne at Aloha Stadium this Saturday. The 2007 Sugar Bowl team will be honored at the game. Head coach Nick Rolovich, defensive back Ikem Okeke and receiver John Ursua weigh in.

(Semi) Uncharted territory

By Brian McInnis on September 18, 2018

In the illustrious history of the Rainbow Wahine volleyball program, something never happened until this week. UPDATE: (Well, almost.) Notably, UH had never entered conference play with a losing record. That changed with last week’s five-set loss to then-No. 12 Oregon, the second defeat to the Ducks in as many nights. It knocked UH down to 4-5 going into Big West play; the Wahine are at UC Davis on Friday and UC Irvine on Sunday. CORRECTION: This is actually the […]

Warrior Beat: West Point is motivating point

By Stephen Tsai on September 18, 2018

Before today’s practice, quarterback Cole McDonald called over several of his teammates. McDonald reminded the players of the feeling following Saturday’s 28-21 loss to Army, their first defeat of the season. “Remember how that felt,” McDonald said he told teammates. “I know I don’t want to feel like that again. I don’t want to let the team down or let Hawaii down again.” The Warriors had an upbeat and seemingly determined practice today. Duquesne is set to arrive tomorrow on […]

Wahine coaching tree grows

By Jason Kaneshiro on September 17, 2018

Former Rainbow Wahine softball standout Alex (Aguirre) Gomez’s new job will bring her back to Hawaii … as a visiting coach. Gomez, who played for UH from 2009-12, was named head coach at Academy of Art on Monday. Academy of Art is scheduled to visit Hawaii for PacWest Conference series against Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo in the spring. As a sophomore, Gomez hit .311 with 13 home runs for the Rainbow Wahine, the last two coming at the Women’s […]

Warriors waste no time preparing for Duquesne

By Stephen Tsai on September 17, 2018

How does that country lyric go? It’s wasting time to waste time? (And if that’s not a country lyric, you’re free to use it.) The Warriors wasted little time in preparing for Duquesne. The coaches watched videos of at least two Duquesne games on yesterday’s flight home from New York. By last night, they had studied videos of all of Duquesne’s games. The prep time was so important the Warriors did away with the weekly coaches’ cook-off competition. The Warriors […]

Even after loss, Big Mac’s bagel on picks still impressive

By Dave Reardon on September 16, 2018

Yes, a loss is a loss. But even after the frustrating 28-21 defeat at West Point, this is still the University of Hawaii football team’s best four-game start to a season in 16 years — with the notable exception of 2007. Other than that Sugar Bowl season, you have to go back to 2002 for the last time the Warriors started at 3-1 or better. Like now, the Warriors had a third-year sophomore at quarterback. But Timmy Chang had a lot […]
