By Stephen Tsai on November 19, 2018

The Mountain West’s offensive player of the week is a backup quarterback who came off the sideline to lead his team from a double-digit, fourth-quarter deficit. Congrats to … Wyoming’s Tyler Vander Waal? Wait. What? Like those similar-themed movies that are released at the same time, Vander Waal and Chevan Cordeiro have a nearly identical storyline. Similar but not the same. > Change: Vander Waal replaced starter Sean Chambers, who was injured in the first series of the game. Cordeiro […]

Warrior Beat: “Stone-cold … gamer”

By Stephen Tsai on November 18, 2018

When asked to describe freshman quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, pass-game coordinator Craig Stutzmann said: “He’s a great kid. He’s got magic. He’s just a stone-cold frickin’ gamer.” * * * * * OK, we know the situation. A player can redshirt if he does not play in more than four games in that season. Cordeiro has played in three games. There are two games remaining — the regular-season finale against San Diego State and the bowl game. Play him or don’t […]

The Rebels led 21-6 at halftime and it was 28-13 when Cordeiro replaced third-year sophomore Cole McDonald with about 12 minutes left […]

There’s a lot on the line on senior night tonight against UNLV. A winning regular season, a Hawaii Bowl berth, and a general sense of accomplishment for the Rainbow Warriors are all at stake for a team that’s lost four straight. UH leads the all-time series against UNLV 15-12, but the Rebels have taken the meeting the last three years. Back on Sept. 29, 1984, UH was also sliding into its home date with Vegas. Dick Tomey’s team was 0-3, […]

Warrior Beat: Manoa wrap-up

By Stephen Tsai on November 16, 2018

Deepest apologies, but it’s been a hectic week. So, in review: On Wednesday, post player Zigmars Raimo celebrated his 21st birthday. In what is a UH basketball tradition, the birthday honoree is serenaded and then presented with a cupcake. And, yes, you’re not having a flashback. As part of the practice rotation, the ‘Bows took a turn this week in Klum Gym. And, yes, it’s still as stuffy as it was back in the sweaty heyday. So, where are the […]
